Just had a thought, maybe someone put it on so low to aid with removing/ refitting the spare so they dont have to lift it as high?
 
That looks a lot bigger than my bracket on yours. Could it be a repair panel someones put on (i.e. just rivetted a sheet of ally to the back door to cover a hole or something)?
yeah may be - i'll have to take the door card off and have a look!
 
Maybe didn't have a tow bar fitted so they mounted the wheel lower to see more out of the back window?

That's the beauty of Land Rovers - decades of mods, bodges and fixes!
 
alot of people fitted them lower down to aid with removing it but alos to gain more viability from the rear window
 
thanks i would like the spare on the back door long term so i'll fix the new mount on higher up.

had another crack at starting it today - getting power to the coil and the points but the plugs are black and the leads are very corroded - ive got a new set of plugs to try and gonna see if i can find some better leads - i should have a few decent ones about. if i was keeping the engine i'd get rid of the points and go for electronic ignition but long term it'll be diesel.

i do love how the firing order is cast into the exhaust manifold :)
 
People are taking spare wheels off doors as the weight kills the hinges over time - you could get a swing away carrier?
 
had a prod around underneith today theres a few bits more welding ive found on the chassis but the main one is the rear spring front hanger

i'm going to take the n/s front wing off to get better access to the bulkhead and the inner wing piece could do with replaceing but it looks like they are available and cheap :)

i've took a couple of photos of the inner wing, 1 of the outrigger and the other one is to show the broken leaf on the back - i definatly need a pair of new springs on the back

Dosnt look too bad for a 40+ year old motor tho, at least the parts/panels are cheap! Hurry up and get it roadworthy then we can go laning up hollinsclough! :rolly:
 
i can't wait to get out in it Pete :)

managed to fit the clutch cylinders today - only problem is the replacement one (master) is a shorter depth on the thread and the adapter wont screw in and seal - i didn't want to cut my adapter down as it would leave it without many threads to grip on
 
took the front wing off today to gain access to the bulkhead it's not too bad only the bit of rot you can see.

i also need a new inner wing mud sheild

and the wiring is a mess - i'm going to take out all the scotch blocks as i hate em

the other photo is a bit of rot in the front chassis leg - doesnt look too tricky to do:)

I'm a bit late to the thread, but I have an '82 County 109 which also has a low mounted rear wheel carrier which is as it came from the factory, so as not to obscure rear visibility I believe. My dad did tow a boat with it, and the options at the time were to mount the spare wheel on the bonnet, move it up the back door, or fab a lower mounting hitch. He went for a lower mounting hitch made out of 3/4 inch plate bolted to the cross member with a couple of supports angled up to the chassis.
Looks like an interesting project - are you going semi authentic, or full custom?
