Hi Guys,

Our family Defender went from our drive near Barnard Castle last night in the early hours. It’s an Arctic Silver unmodified 110 XS Station Wagon reg OY11 XJV. Off hand I haven’t any serial no’s, but keep your eyes pealed please. Pretty gutting, can’t have anything nice these days..

Charlie

Sorry for you lost being a numpty and from Manchester England which is the nearest large town.

Nearest town is Darlington, nearest city is probably Middlesbrough, but that’s about 50 miles away. We’re in the middle of the countryside in County Durham

Sorry for your loss, hope you get it back & the scumbags get their just deserts
If I had room to park on my own driveway I'd invest in a good quality locking post (or two side by side) to completely block the vehicle in.

Sorry for your loss. If you are in a semi rural and out of the way location with no passing A/B-Roads it would almost suggest a targeted theft rather than an opportunistic thing.
Hope you had a tracker (or similar) in it. Best wishes for its safe return.

Sorry to hear this - I nearly had mine nicked at the weekend.... :(

Have you posted on landywatch?

Yes I have seen it in the FB group :)
I hope you get it found! Check anywhere and everywhere it might have just been dumped on a back road...

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the belated response, it seems to take a huge amount of time talking to insurers etc!

No sign of the vehicle, and by now I imagine it’s in bits, well hidden or abroad. It didn’t have a tracker, with hindsight it might have been a good idea, I think if they want a Defender it’s going to go though and I’m not sure all the precautions in the world help that much. A friend had his lifted on to a low loader in broad daylight a little while ago, seems most things are pointless if they’ll go to those lengths..

It's little consolation - in fact it's no consolation at all - but in 2016/17 the North East saw a 69% increase in Defender thefts, the highest in the UK. It's obviously organised but I suspect that for the cops, it's not their problem: just give out a reference number and let the insurance companies pay. It's distinctly possible that the combined police budgets here in the North East have been reduced by that much in the last few years. However, if any other class of crime saw such a massive percentage increase, there would be quite a hue and cry amongst MP's.

Agreed. This is an area that’s a big contributor to that stat, and whilst the police came out to pat us on the head it clearly wasn’t with the intention of taking action. There was no thought of taking prints, SOC people or anything like that despite the value of the theft

To be fair, it is unlikely that the specific targeting of vehicles has NOT been discussed by various police services jointly: but the police have so little cash or staff to spare. There is probably intelligence but intelligence without evidence is innactionable in the current climate. The containers leaving the port are rarely checked - no customs staff. I feel so sorry for you and others who save and work to make their families safe and secure and by doing so are targeted with impunity by the scum and dregs who increasingly populate our communities, be they natives, itinerants or in-comers. Good luck.

Thank you for the kind words, and to the others above

Not 100% sure I agree this is a resource issue. We live in a very rural area, there isn’t a drug, anti social, stabbing/shooting problem here. If you aren’t going to deal with Defenders and quads being stolen around here you may as well pack up and go home. My feeling is as the poster above, give them a crime number and let the insurance company take the strain. There is no evidence because they aren’t collecting evidence. Not really good enough. Of course my view is currently slightly jaundiced..

It’s unlikely there will be any evidence to actually examine unless there was CCTV and then all you generally see is hoodies tossing about in the process of stealing the vehicle.
The only hope is a tracking device, if you are lucky and report the theft fast enough it will lead the rozzers to the Land Rover.
Police round here have been instructed not to chase Land Rovers due to the risk of them crashing, and also not to go on to Traveller sites.
If mine gets stolen l won’t replace it, l’ll buy a LWB Jeep Wrangler as they are the same sentiment as a Defender and don’t seem to attract the scumbags.

Just keep an eye on it of course. But the scum out there will keep trying until they're made inoperative.

Its an absolute cast iron certainty there wont be any evidence if you dont check for fingerprints etc...

A friend of mine had his Defender 90 hardtop nicked, police visited and said 'cameras everywhere, we'll get it back'. They found it the next day, tested the tape holding the swapped number plate for DNA and arrested the scum about two weeks later. Prolific car thief. Result.

Excellent result. If he was a prolific thief, he must have had a network - hopefully they all got nicked!
