Hi all. Just gauging some opinions please
About a year ago my 90 failed its MOT. Usual front outriggers ( back ones done) and some rot near the rear trailing arm mounts. So, spanner in hand I started dismantling with a view to fitting a galv chassis. Do it once was my thinking.
Needless to say, a year on and its just sat there. So. Do I save up for the galv or sell and then put proceeds towards one already done.
if the former I have no idea as to the value of a 1986 200tdi 90

If the mechanicals and panels etc are all good, much better the devil you know rather than a tarted up money pit. If you’re doing the swap yourself, it’s only the price of the chassis and various nuts, bolts and washers
 
Its hard to make any sort of judgement with having a.good look at the vehicle but Id say the chassis and all the bits you need will probably be as much as your landy is worth. By the time you've fitted it you may have added about 75% onto the value. Of course what Ive just said is dependant on all sorts of things but as @Def90man says, better the vehicle you know rather than take on an unknown with a shiny chassis, somebody lime me might have fitted it.

As above - way better the devil you know. Always, no exception.. :)

No electronics to muck about with and chase for a week or three, so, definitely stick with it..
 
Do you do your own welding? If not something to learn, a big help in keeping old trucks going. Pluss one on keeping the one you have. Some pics of your chassis problem areas?
 
Thanks for the responses chaps. I am hearing a ringing endorsement for keeping it. The mechanicals are good, the engine being strong if a little smokey on start up. The synch between 1st and 2nd gear is dodgy but I have a mate whose dad can rebuild. I rebuilt a mini one many moons ago. Bloody detent springs went everywhere. A Marsland chassis seem to be about £3000, which is expensive!
 
They are all smoky on start up, it is just that way because excess fuel is delivered to get it going. Old 200's will often start after turn or two even having sat a long time.:)
 
It does. If I went out to it now, once the battery was charged, it would start first click. I have no doubt. Better than my Beetle, which is a bit of a waiting game, while if thinks about it, but that's on a button so probably just the terminals needing a clean, Lol
 
Hmm! I have heard mixed reports on the fitting of a Richards one, but I suppose at nearly a £1000 cheaper is worth considering, lol

Not if your like me,o_O I cant fit old bits on a new shinny chassis so I spent another few Gs on bits
& sold it 5 years later without doing a single thing to it apart from servicing & a set of pads. :)
1986 lr90 4c got more than I paid out when I built it. Should have kept it but building another one.
 
Is you going hard top or soft top?

Not sure on this one ive got both :) My mate is pestering me for it & tbh I dont have the time
for it atm, the 200tdi which I wanted to use over the winter has a doosil leak at the IP & its road
legal but needs finishing paint wise (thats not getting done either) o_O

With the weather always being so shit here, I’m thinking if I can find a nice roof and sides I would do away with the soft top.

Another vote for doing it yourself. I did and it was a great experience.
I used Richard's and the nearside tubular outrigger was 15mm out. ie distance between that outrigger and lugs on rear cross member for tub bolting was 15mm too short. Take some main dimensions off your old chassis before you scrap it and check the Richard's one before you accept it. Keep in kind with any rebuild there will be issues. If you do your own you can sort them properly. If you buy somebody else's..........

Ive got a nice white ribbed roof, id need to go & look at the sides they are in my container in the boat
yard. They are black & iirc they have a couple of recovery leds on the back, ive got a back door its nots
the best with a garden gate bolt on it to lock it lol

I’ve got a ribbed one and sides but I’m not fussed on it. I might put it on the v8 at some point. The wife likes them ribbed though :eek:
