I'm Chris from Sutton, Surrey and have just purchased a 2001 Range Rover 4.6 Vogue with 84k miles and in excellent condition bar two problems.

The first is a leaking gasket on the throttle body heater but i have piced up the fixing kit today for £12 and will be an easy fix.

My next challenge is to replace the sat nav/stereo as i have no sound from it. The sat nav works (albeit that it is 11 years old and rubbish) but no voice prompts come out and the radio/cd/tape has n sound either. I can hear a speaker thump when i turn the system off so I am not sure if the fault is with the amp or the satnav unit muting th sound permantly.

anyway, I have ordered a new double din 7in screen head unit with built in satnav and dvd player and digital tv which i intend to fit in the place where the oem sat nav screen is now.

Bearing in mnd this is a 12 speaker Harmon Kardin system originally in what other issues am i likely to face during fitting. ie the oem amp etc.

The new unit comes with standard iso connection.

another question, i wil no longer need the standard stereo headset and have yet to ecide what to do with the hole on its renewal. I did see single din cubby holes for sale as well as range rover side trim and did think about converting it to a storage space on the centre console, any other ideas.

If it turns out to be the stereo head unit, let me know as I've got a couple of new Genuine units kicking around.

If you have no sound from either sat nav or radio my guess is the DSP amp located behind the sub woofer in the boot is faulty. These are very expensive and hard to find 2nd hand.

Hi some of the satnav units in the P38 can be quite sensitive (MK2 units). The previous owner may have replace a broken sat nav computer with a unit out of an l322, this can cause the stereo to mute and only give very quiet nav instructions. May be worth extracting your sat nav unit to check the modle number.

PS if you decide to bin the satnav unit make sure it powers down (all lights out on the computer - can take a few minutes) before you disconnect the unit or the battery as the MK2 units generally fry themselves if they are not powered down properly

Do lots of research before ripping anything out. These systems are very complex and not lke a normal audio setup n other cars. My car is same model year as yours and all i used from the HK system was the speakers. Ran new wiring to them and put in a seperate 6way amp with ts own power supply.

I paid $50 for mine, spanking new. Good old eBay. Defo sounds like the amp gone, this is quite a common thing as the location of the amp leaves it prone to water damage.

You are in for a world of pain, fabrication, wiring and expence fitting a double din. Good luck and post up pics when its done

I did read before that the amp was the likely fault but to be honest after having an alpine sat nav in a previous car (with the flip out screen) I find the standard 11 year old sat-nav terrible and cumbersome.

I would prefer to have the more modern double din set up and will work towards it.

When you say a world of fabrication, are you meaning there is not enough depth behind the oem satnav screen because i have measured it and it appears to be double din size, certainly width by height?

I accept i'll probably also lose the 6 cd changer but as the new stereo has usb, ipod and sd card capability I'm not to worried about having a changer.

Good luck to you mate, let me know how you get on, I'm considering changing my X reg 2000 4.6 Vogues original Alpine unit for a new double din sized Alpine GPS/CD/DVD/radio/handsfree.

Project on hold for the moment, but would be interested to hear how it goes and any snags

There is a guy selling the DSP amp on ebay for £80, I think hes got one left. Why not change that and use a portable sat nav. Keeps the car stock and whilst the stereo is a bit old fashioned I find the sound to be more than exceptable and I like cranking it up, bit of an ageing rocker

To hook up new gear to the excisting speakers is a bit of a mission by all accounts. Although there is a guide on rangerovers.net.
