Have a defender 90 ordered some heavy duty steering arms. They came installed them but they seem to be too short ? A lot of thread showing on the track rod ends. Do I need a discovery arms ? Few photos
I would say yes, that steering rod looks short. Can not be much thread inside. Get back to Gwyn.
Arms need to match the pitman drop arm and any other changes on the vehicle.....
Just to be clear the track rod is the one behind the axle, this one is the same length for both Discovery and Defender. Tracking is adjusted on this rod. Only difference between standard and HD rod is no bracket for a steering damper as is found on a disco. When HD rods are fitted to Discovery the damper is moved on to the steering rod like a Defender. [kit available for this]
The steering rod [ also called "drag link", an old term that predates cars] is where you adjust to get an equal amount of lock when turning. Some adjust this to get steering wheel level, while this can work if just a tad needed but it will result in less lock in one direction. Removal of steering wheel and correcting position on splines is needed if this has been messed up in the past.
Just looks like you have a Defender HD steering rod when you need a Discovery steering rod to go with the Discovery drop arm. Still will need the damper bracket kit to go with it, just a bolt on item.
