I've just got my steel modular back from being blasted and painted. The main corrosion was from where the nuts compressed against the steel, breaking the paint.

Is there a way to protect the paint from the wheel nuts? I was thinking about a rubber washer or something, but perhaps that will impact the nuts function?
 
will copperslip protect the paint from the compressive force though? I wonder if the nuts crack the paint when its tightened up?
 
The compressive force is kinda the point of wheel nuts. I wouldn’t want a rubber washer in there!
 
Tightening the wheel nuts will probably crack the paint away, but the fact that the nuts are tight should prevent to build up of corrosion at the point of contact.
You can wipe a smear of copperslip or similar to the contact point, but although it has been discussed many times, my advice would be to avoid getting grease on the threads of the bolts. That could lead to the wheel nuts being over-tightened which could lead to the studs stretching and weakening. Most people would advise that the wheel nuts are tightened or torqued up dry.

Any copper slip will reduce the friction between the nut and the paint, if the paint is thin, all good, if it's thick then it's going to crack regardless. If it still chips the paint you've got a smear of grease there to keep the water away.
