For a start, do NOT pump the throttle when trying to start this engine.
Leave your clog clear of the throttle pedal.
Only then will the injection pump be able to set itself into COLD START mode, which requires (a) NO throttle and (b) the engine to be stopped or turning over at VERY low revs - like starter motor speeds and no more.
Cold Start mode flings in LOADS of extra diesel AND radically alters the injection timing, all in the hope she lights up quickly. Once running at tickover speed or more the Cold Start mode disengages and the engine should keep running.
People here's going to ask you about clean fuel filter, checking lift pump, using the GLOW position (if it has one) on the key and so on.
Remember, in principle all diesels are a bummer to start from cold, and if the least thing goes wrong they more than likely won't. There's going to be a technique, and once you've found it, that should be that.
NEVER resort to ether sprays. They will damage the engine.
