Hi everyone, hope you can help, and sorry if I’ve posted this in the wrong section.

I’ve just baught a 2012 FL2 with 70k miles, but it is struggling starting when sat overnight. Starting the rest of the day or when the engine is warm it’s fine.

Link to the video showing the starting. I know it’s had lots of work done by the previous owner, including battery, glow plugs, fuel filter and sensors.

It was 8 degrees this morning in the video for reference.

Do you know if it's had the extra earth lead from the battery to the starter motor? if not that would be worth doing, also it could be the glow plugs, 8c you let us know when it's -5c and how it starts then.

Yes it has the extra earth lead, and had a full set of 5v glow plugs as it is the 2012. Not looking forward to the frost I must say.

Being a 2012 which is one of the later models, can you check the state of your glow plugs with the code reader? I know on the older models it’s quite difficult to do although I did discover away in the end. My 2008 went through glow plugs like they were going out of fashion. I eventually found NGK seemed to last longest and perform best. OEM Land Rover plugs only lasted one year.☹️

It needs new glow plugs.

It’s had a full set of new 5v glow plugs and glow plug control module. Power is getting to them as well. No difference in starting after they were replaced vs before hand
The way that's starting is exactly like the plugs aren't heating.
Other causes can be low compression through badly sealing valves, or a failed head gasket, but that's normally accompanied by coolant pressurising.
If glow plugs haven't fixed it, I'd do a compression test next.

Could the timings be off somehow, ie, it’s heating, but not heating for long enough perhaps? Don’t like the sound of failed gasket at all. Sounds far too expensive. How would I know if coolant is pressurising? I will get it booked in at the garage. Just needs to do its mot first. Needs pads and discs all round. I also expect a failed PTU as it’s very noisy up front!

I managed to speak with the guy I purchased it off today, who advised that compression testing had already been done and was ok. I bought the car knowing about the starting issues, but they are proving worse than i hoped for. You're right though, it does sound like plugs but they have been changed, along with the control module
 
Sounds like they didn’t get to the bottom of the problem. You could do with a way to monitor the current to each of the plugs or even all of them. Think I did a video on testing them a while back. I will have a look later when I get home.
