My 93 rr has a mind of its own when starting. Sometimes i will go to start it and it will turn over and fire up fine but othertimes it will turn over and over and not start.
I have checked the sparkplugs, cleaned and checked the gaps and it makes no difference. When I boost off another vehicle the starter motor turns faster but it fails to start, the (brand new) battery shows that its flat but the dash warning light does'nt appear which makes it even more weird.
Any views would be appreciated !

On mine, I nearly always find an earth fault, they seem very delicate if the earth is even slighty poop, check starter earths, then battery earth, i even had to fit an extra earth from block to chassis

When cranking do you smell petrol? Is the fuel pump running?

Check also the engine speed connector for ECU at the negative terminal of coil (white wire with black stripe). Loose connector caused me similar problems. If there is no signal for the ECU, injectors won't fire, hence no smoke. The car even stalled couple of times during the winter. Once it did that in front of a Land Rover sales representative (what do you guys call your car shops?), obviously suggesting something - a Disco perhaps?

Thanks for the advice. When it cranks over you can smell fuel - I even had to phone the AA when it would'nt start ang all they said was buy a new battery.

If it will not fire when you boost it, its not the battery. If you can smell the petrol - it's probably not the engine speed signal.

Have you checked the coolant temp sensor?

Again thanks for the info, I think its part of a bigger problem. I am having my heater matrix changed next week because my interior looks and smells like a lake . Is the coolant temp. sensor located on the expansion tank ?
Also the negative terminal is at 180 degrees to the negative loom and this can lead to a number of problems.
