Just to clarify a few things, starter wasn't throwing out when fitted, taken out and attached leads to battery and all seems to be fine, when it's fitted all I get is a wining noise and and no sign of engaging to flywheel. So frustrating

Try pushing the land rover in gear a short distance and try again. If it starts then, you probably have teeth missing as said above

Morning, starter taken off this morning all flywheel teeth seems to be fine, I tested starter on the floor and it's throwing out as it should, I am a bit stuck on how to get it spinning once on the floor ie what terminals to touch

if its a non pre engaged starter make sure the start dog is moving up the bendix when energised they can stick due to a build up of crap good clean with brake cleaner normally sorts it

Yeh all sliding up and down as it should be, just when not fitted back on landy

Try attaching a jump lead from the engine to the -ve battery terminal then try again its possibly a bad engine earth...and/or short the starter solenoid that could also be U/S...
