Hi all,
Just as I thought I'd identified the issue with the sluggish start, a new problem hits my 300tdi starting up!
The sluggish start I believe is due to the fuel draining back to the tank.
Now that my drive has remained dry for more than two minutes, I've noted a wet patch under the rear of the Lanny, on inspection it's diesel. Initially suspecting the fuel tank I'm leaning more to the fuel line having a leak that runs on to the tank, hopefully the cause of the sluggish start - I have another thread going on this!
However, the latest problem is with the starter motor.
As normal with the first start of the day, she takes a few turns before firing up and assuming she's not been left for too long she starts fine after that. But on Saturday she did something new! After a few turns, she stopped making the normal engine trying to start noise and instead started making a high pitch electric motor spinning noise. This didn't stop when I took the key out of the ignition.
After what seemed a long time of wondering how I'd stop the motor spinning, it slowed down and stopped it's self.
I tried again and the same happened, she tried to turn over a couple of times and then just made the high pitch spinning noise, this time with smoke from the starter motor area (I had the bonnet up this time!).
So, any suggest from this knowledgeable forum?
A friend thinks it's the solenoid and suggested starting it again but this time hitting the starter motor with a hammer!
So, I returned to try this with the aid of my wife at the wheel, but nothing, not even a click never mind a turn! So, what have I done now?
Being nervous of the starter doing things without the key and the smoke effects, I disconnected the battery, has this triggered the alarm/ imobiliser in someway? The fob appears to do it's thing and the alarm light on the dash goes out, but does this mean anything if I've removed the battery?
Oh, and my battery makes a hissing/ bubbling noise which I'm told could mean one of the cells is damaged. Apparently it's a new battery (I got the Lanny last November), but I was surprised to see it says leisure battery on it! I thought leisure batteries were for as they say, leisure, such as in caravans, but the battery does say "supreme starting power" on the side so perhaps I was wrong. Either way it sounds like the battery is faulty so I'll be getting a new one - what battery do you guys recommend?
Thanks for your help.
