I think my Starter might be shot, I tried bench testing the the engine by short circuiting the loom and just running leads from the Battery to Starter leads with jump leads (2 for the Earths!), and the Coil + to Distributor.

I didn't even get as far as seeing if it would run as the engine would only turn over incredibly slowly and for no more than one full revolution (or so).

The Battery had been given a reasonably good charge and was showing circa 13 volts, but it has also been sitting in the shed for 5 years or so, so it could well be knackered. I'm going to have it checked with the expectation it will need replacing.

I've taken the Starter off and will strip it down and give it a clean. If anything looks particularly buggered I will cost up replacement parts but have in my mind there are modern replacements which are of a better design. I'm aware of the Startrex unit http://rockymountainspares.co.uk/product/startrex-motor/ at £150, but wondered in anyone knew of any others?

Long ago I replaced a V8 starter with much smaller, modern equivalent and it was was unreal (really really fast). I seem to remember that was about £100.

:)

Try a good battery first. I just did the same with mine, 95ah battery, been off the vehicle for 18 months, but charged regularly. Mind, it was never the best anyway, even though it was Bosch.

The starter just clicked, even though I charged the battery for 24 hrs beforehand.

Bought a 105ah battery, and now it flies over.
