after failing to start the AA diagnosed the starter motor and showed me how to start it by tapping the motor while someone else turns the key. I'll have to get a permanent fix and can't do the work myself, bearing in mind i'll have to pay either way would you suggest fixing it or replacing it as the most cost effective. I ask cause i've no clue how much labor would be involved in fixing it?

agreed, can get em new of £130 or recon at LR dealer.

Couple of hours to do yourself.

Did mine, couldn't be bother to repeat if my repairs didn't fix it.

Shame you can't manage the job. Usually its the solenoid contacts that are burnt away. You can get a repair kit off Ebay for silly money, like £15 or so. Gotta take the unit out the car and do a minor stip down. Did mine and its been solid ever since.

I took the gubbins out of mine, it was sticking. Bushes (red circle) were A1

Get some silicone spray (with red straw attached to nozzle) and blast some in through the rubber boot (Very underside of starter, yellow circle).

This worked for a while, then the terminal contacts in the ignition barrel added to the problem, these had to be cleaned also.

I wouldn't change anything until you have at least inspected it, or absolutely sure it's knackered
