Hi, I have an intermittent problem when turning the key, most the time the engine fires up but sometimes I get a loud whining/grinding sound. I have to try again slowly with the ignition to get it to fire up properly. Does this sound like a sticky starter motor or the starter solonoid? Not sure which to buy to replace.

Thanks Carl.

So all these possibilities will be rectified with a new starter motor? Sorry haven't got the best knowledge with motors :)

No sorry, if you have a worn starter ring on the flywheel, a replacement starter motor won't fix it.

I don't know if hippos normally suffer from this. However, if the starter is removed, there is a good view of the starter ring, and the engine can be slowly rotated and the ring gear inspected for wear/missing teeth.

the load winning sound will be your starter just winding round so I would suggest a new solenoid or a repair kit of ebay I had one on the old freelander and it worked great. hope this helps you out
