Brush and roller seem to be working OK for me - makes a change I normally just guff the paint on a part and hope it doesn't run too badly :D

If you use a rag roller (not foam) and roll nice and softly, then use a soft varnish brush to smooth any runs and do the hard to reach areas it comes out lovely...... so far......

This is my least enjoyable part of the build, I'm a spanner monkey, not a bodywork fairy. I reckon once the primer is down and cured, it'll need at least 3 coats of colour to get a good, even coverage.

Bonus is i've nearly finished putting the dash back together :D Then it's windscreen back in, and I can move on to the rear side panels.

****. just realised i've missed a bit of Oxide....:mad:

So much for my deadline >:/

Engine is back in one piece, but smoking like a wall street fat-cat.
Slave cylinder isn't disengaging clutch properly, so it'll probs be clutchplate or release arm borked.

Either way it's Gearbox Out job to investigate the problem.

Smoke is an issue, i'd adjust it out with an Inj. pump twiddle, but it's on the extent of it's clockwise travel already after an initial adjustment, so i'm thinking it might be a stretched timing chain......suggestions anyone?

your at the back together stage and up and running.....
i suggest you take two weeks off and give me a fighting chance lol....
sorry cant help with any of them problemsl, however i do know how to change a spark plug, heater controller and a few other things that have slipped my mind lol

slot the pump mountins :D
post a pic of the smoke, rhino!

was it a clean runner when you got it?

Smoky when I got him, I was hoping it'd adjust out, but i've rotated the pump as far as it'll go, and the pump is ticking it's nuts off.

The smoke has reduced, but TBH, i'm thinking if the timing chain is stretched, it might explain why the pump has to be right on it's limit to get any decent performance and fuel dosage......or the timing itself has drifted.

I'd take a piccy, but the smoke is so dense it makes my eyes sting

**putting the build on the back burner for a while, i've got to sort this smoke, and lift out the gearbox to do the clutch, which is going to put me back quite a while**

Oh, and pretty convinced the smoke is not the T chain, more the drive backlash adjustment needs tickling or someone has put the drive gear back in at sometime one tooth out. Won't know for sure until i've put the flywheel back on and ****ed around with timing...heres hoping.

ffs more money time effort and heartache i feel for yer matey :eek:

bluddy hard luck there rhino, i no where near that stage yet (and thats if i have the balls to attempt it). keep going you will get there (or at least thats what people keep telling me lol)
next sat get together at my place if you or anyone else is interested, pm me for details

Thanks lads - I'm just a bit narked ATM, I fix one thing and manage to find summat else to fix quite quickly :D
I kinda knew the oil seal was borked, I put it to the back of the list, hoping i'd find some time to do it in a month or two, but hey-ho such is life with a landy - wouldn't have it any other way if i'm being honest.
Decided i'm not gonna hit the deadline to run him for a bit before the MOT is due ( end of April) so i'll go all out and crawl over him, fixing the lot as I go.

might ave that bit missing off the end of yer dash
Cheers dude, but i've got the endcap, just didn't paint the back of the front panel....

keep ya chin up laddioooo, it will come together - you got the know how and patience to get through this little set back...... and i dont want this kind of moaning when you hit problems with mine lol

Sorry to hear about your setbacks mate :( Keep it going though, this is one of the swiftest resorations I've seen, let alone informative and well-executed!

The paint job looks tip-top as well! I was just going to use synthetic brushes to paint mine but might look at using rollers too now...

Tom

I was surprised at how evenly the roller method covered TBH. Works really well and the odd patchy bit can be cured by just laying off with a Synth brush afterwards.

yep i am using rollers (small type) and its going on really well, again with a brush for hard to reach bits etc.....

Quick update as i'm home witht the sniffles - Man flu methinks.

All the clutch bits are ordered and a few other bits.

While I was in the engine compartment, looking at the injector pump i thought i'd tinker with the timing in more detail.....opened the inspection cover to find........NOTHING !
The ****ING timing marker is missing :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: and

If anyone needs one the part number is ERC2250 and it's about £5 britcar, LRseries, Padocks, and Famous Four can all get hold of them relatively easy.

I'm going to whip out the oil pump/inj pump drive gear later, and rotate it one tooth on the cam to bring it back into range.

Been busy today - my Wife is in NY for a few days on holiday with her best mate, so i'm free to work away nag-free. well apart from my son, who keeps me on my toes !

Anyway, finally found a truck cab local to me, so decided to whip the roof and sides off, and also sort the tub "seats" out. What follows is a ****ING DISGRACE >:/

Roof and sides, oicked out and stored, it was time to whip the "seats" out. I say seats, my good friend says they're more like large scale dolls house fittings....made from floorboards, chunks of MDF, Fibreboard, foam,Chipboard, skirting and lots of staples.

P110217003.jpg
P110217015.jpg

When you consider the two "seats" were simply SCREWED into the floor...yes...SCREWED you start to see why i'm having kittens.
We pulled the "seats" out with minimal force, so imagine anyone who was sat in them being involved in a low speed impact.

Now ONE "seat" had a "seatbelt". This "seatbelt" was bolted using an exhaust clamp to the wheel arch, and through a "slot" in the "seatbase".. thusly...

P110217004.jpg

Now, imaging a human body, turning into appx 1/4 tonne of force in a mid speed impact, the whole "seat" and "belt" would rip free and either offer no support, or simply slingshot the victim in a different direction.

Another reason why general knowledge people should not do safety or seating "modifications" themselves.
What a ****ing JOKE >:/ Amazingly, this went through an MOT !

After taking a chill and learning to laugh at other peoples ****e work, I went back to Smidge and did a bit more.
To-nights plan was to get the flywheel and clutch assy remounted, and fiddle with the timing a little and then get the front output seal on the gearbox done ready for fitment later next week.

You gotta love Landys - even a hole provided for wedging a bar in the starter ring while torquing up the bolts :D

IMG_20110217_193544.jpg

New timing marker...although it can be mounted nearly 3 deg out due to the slots...so i'm having to take a gamble on the mount position...
IMG_20110217_193555.jpg

Typically, Paddocks have, yet again, sent the wrong seal - the part number listed on the website is in fact for the Outer casing seal, and not the output shaft....two totally different part numbers. I normally check them as it's happened before, but I didn't bother...:doh:

Nevermind - i'll give them merry hell tomorrow.

Also bought a manual pulley block today for £52 from machinemart. Great for gearbox and engine lifts :D My budget is shot to ****, so may aswell kill it in style :D

Now you see it....
IMG_20110217_145413.jpg

Drum roll .........

Now you don't :)
IMG_20110217_193528.jpg

Now someone buy my facking Safari stuff so I can make more room in the garden :D

Onwards and upwards, what. Pip, Pip !
