Hello folks about 3 mths ago i rebuilt front disco 300tdi axles for my 87 landrover 90 i bought cross groved and drilled disks and pads all round mintex and new calipers ,
ok so the brakes were giving off a lot of dust and squeeling a bit .
so i bought a new ebc set of pads red stuff with brake in coating ruffed up disks, and fitted and boy they squeel like no tommorrow.
so took pads out cleaned out as i had put copper grease on both sets , so still the same ,
so today,ive bought ceramic paste and noticed some of ebc pads breaking up a bit so cleaned up mintex and squeeling like mad .ive took it on a long run and got it right up to temp the brakes and braked v hard they were smelling ,but after a few mikes squeel im bloody lost......
 
To state the blatantly obvious. have you fitted the anti vibration springs or sprung steel plates? :rolleyes:
 
hi thanks for reply ive fitted on the front the springs between the pads and the rear pads have spring like black clips on thew top of pad .
 
So, the squeal is coming from the front only? Is it from one side or both? I wonder if the mounting surfaces for the calipers were clean and flat?
 
well yesterday ive changed pads back to mintex and scrubbed them and used ceramic based grease to put on back of pads and took it down a long mountain road with brakes on it squeeled lots then faded as brakes faded and today it doesnt seem so bad , i rebuilt axles rubbed them all down and painted them all up with blue hammerite then mounted calipers
 
My thoughts were that a squeal is from a vibration, something moving, so if something is not seated firmly or is slightly loose it could cause the movement to cause a squeal.
I hope you've sorted it. :)
 
I agree, brake squeal is almost never the friction part of the pad on the disc, but the back of the pad on the piston. Being a high frequency vibration.

Op - did you remember to break in the pads properly as well? It won't affect brake squeal, but will have a big bearing on brake performance.
 
hi yes i did break the pads in but it seems i was mis informed by the company that supplied disks ,it seems my groved disks are the wrong way around , it stated it leaflet to put the grooves this way / / / but infact after phoning them today the grooves run
in accordance with way it was running \ \ \ \ ,thats what i originally thought and looked on the net as theyre not left /right ones so another job the weekend lol thanks tho guys
 
Yes, you want the grooves so that they appear to be spinning 'outwards' as the wheel goes round in a forward direction. The idea is it helps to deflect water and debris so the friction surfaces can make better contact. You want to be throwing this outwards rather than pulling it in to the centre as the wheel goes round. Swap 'em over and see if it makes a difference.
 
well disks are on right way now with another set of new pads fingers crossed

Well that was a waste of time and money getting a bit fed up guys i cannot understand it squeeling like mad on medium braking and i have tried lots of things going down a mountain a couple of times braking untill they fade it goes for a while then back the same i think its not all the ebc ultimate pads and mintex and another set ,i think its these terrafirma grooved cross drilled discs im going to bearmach in morning to pick up a standard set ...any ideas folks? thx allan
 
Before you fitted the callipers and discs did you make sure the mounting / mating surfaces were clean and free of paint? have you checked the discs for run out?
 
Hi wimblowdriver. Yes when i changed the discs to the right way as the company told me to fit them the other way round i removed all paint ect and discs are true. No shudder at all and its when medium or light braking it shrieks. Lots but hard braking quiet

That's what I was getting at.
The annoying thing is that these things often turn out to be something simple. Do you think both sides are squealing?
I would think it will be down to tiny movements of the pads or the calipers. If it happens on light braking then as the pad and caliper are pulled forwards there mustn't be enough friction to hold them forwards. One of them must be able to spring back a tiny bit then get dragged forward again, etc, etc.
 
Only 2 more things I can think of. 1) The bolts holding the discs or callipers on are not bottoming out and fully clamping even though they are tight. (Unlikely). 2) the high performance discs are un suited to a tratters braking characteristics. (probable).
 
Good thinking, but I would have thought he would have bought discs compatible with the Landy.
 
Im thinking the discs are unsuitable bought them for a disco 300 tdi as the axles are 300 tdi but going to fit delphi discs asap
