I've been after a 110 Hi-cap for years.

I found this one on eBay last weekend, and bought it.

Arranged to go and collect it, I had to borrow a trailer as there was no MOT and tax.
On the way there my 300tdi Disco decided it had had enough, and threw a strop by blowing it's head-gasket.

After getting recovered home, I borrowed my bosses 110 puma and tried again the next day.

I know most of us have read some really good rebuild threads on 'ere (JC1's and 200tdiayre spring to mind), but I have nowhere near the talent of either of those guys!
Most of the work will be done on my drive, with just a domestic tool-kit. Although I do have access to my mate Phil, who is a mechanic and MOT tester.
I also don't have tonnes of money, so any parts fitted have either been saved up for, or scavenged from the now dead Disco.

The plan for the 110 is to be a working vehicle. I work for a couple of foresters/tree-surgeons, run a riding stables and do a lot of shooting in the winter.
So, any up-grades will be done to make the 110 more practical.

Just been to the stables, and Phil was there (he keeps a horse with us). I asked if I could borrow his grinder to get the bottom shock bolts off.

Went round his house and while he was looking for his grinder, I found a set of series seats at the back of his garage (he has a restored S2).

"You can have those for a tenner" he says!

I nearly tore his arm off!

Looks pretty good, go over it well with a hammer best to be abit hard on it and get everything fixed than miss bits.

I want a Hi Cap myself live the look of them and would be good for work too

Cheers boys and girls.

Fitted the other 2 Disco wheels this evening, it was too hot to do much else!

Anyway, thought I'd take her for a quick spin around the country estate (so all on private roads) where I live.
She was abit smoky for a while. I assumed that was because she'd been sat for best part of a year.

I was well happy. Engine pulls well for a 19j, no knocks and bangs, gearbox is quiet and changes positively and the brakes work well.

When I got back the smoke had cleared, but there's still a puff of blueish haze when the turbo spools up. I'll just see how that develops.

Also the rocker-box breather has been disconnected from the air-box, and been diverted to under the chassis. There is only a very fine mist coming from it, so I'm assuming that the piston rings are fairly sound...

Anyway, that's it for today. Need to save some pennies for some new fiddly bits!!

I know, the shocks are knackered.

I am gonna nick the 3 month old Pro-comp ones off the disco, along with the front and rear dislocation cones and galvanised turrets.

The basic plan is to get it into a state that's MOT'able over the next couple of weeks, which shouldn't be too bad as it's all just basic fiddly stuff (lights, washers, a full service, seat belts etc).
I need to get it done soon, as I don't have a vehicle of my own since the Disco expired.

Then over the next couple of months fettle things that need it, and add stuff like light-bar, steering guard, snorkel....

Trust me, it won't be precious!

Anyway. Went to my local indy Landy place this morning with 50 quid in my pocket (helped a local farmer load 350 small bales of hay into a customer's barn).

Came away with new indicator and side lights, new wipers and a washer jet nozzle thingy and a new rocker gasket.

The side lights were the later kind, so need to be changed tomorrow, because they won't fit through the holes in the front wing.

The indicators worked a treat, apart from the passenger side, which seemed to have been bodged together by Mr. Bean!!
Eventually got it worked out. ( I don't 'do' electrics). I now have indicators. Yay!

So, list of jobs yet to do;
Side lights
Seat belts (I'm hoping I can cobble the Disco ones into something)
Door mirrors
Shocks and front turrets.

I reckon if I get a decent run at it tomorrow, she should be MOT'able by the end of the week.

Wiring it all in was fairly straight forward in the end. After trying to bend my arms into various different positions, I decided to remove the headlights to improve access. That was much easier!!

The Disco seatbelts aren't going to work in the 110, so it looks like I'm going to have to buy new. Shame.

Paddocks are doing the wing mirrors for a tenner, so I am going to place an order with them in the next couple of days, for those and a couple of other things so it's over 50 quid and I get the free delivery!

Still got to do the shocks.

Took it for a long run round the estate this afternoon, the smoke cleared much sooner, and by the time I got back the exhaust was clear, with only a puff of black/blue at high revs... Happy days!

FFS!

Went out this evening after work to fettle some other bits and bobs...

Now, You know I said the driver's door was shagged? Well, to close it properly I've had to give it a hefty slam.

Anyway, sat in the driver's seat started the engine, gave the door a hefty slam and......

The frikkin window exploded into my lap!

Was lucky really.
Charlie ,my boss was here having a beer and a chat, and he was expecting me to be covered in claret. Turns out he has a spare window in his lock-up.

Anyway, lesson for today?
Don't slam knackered Defender doors!
