be careful though, not sure if the TD5 is the same, but the 300tdi were really shallow, drivers side is ok, but the passenger hits the wiper motor with normal depth speakers.
I got a deeper mounting ring for it.

10cm is just under 4", 4" speakers are avaliable off the shelf too

TD5 is the same. Had to make a thicker mounting ring for mine.

If you insist on using these funny foreign measures, then
4" = 10.160cm
13cm = 5.125in
As others have said the front speakers are 4"

I'm a bit of a thicko when it comes to auto electrics and stereos. So what holes need cutting in the lower dash to fit a speaker? Is it just a hole for the speaker wire or is it a big hole to recess the whole speaker?

I already said, 4", which most places sell, as well as 10 & 13s.
why do you want to know which cm speaker fits when the hole is for a 4"??

depends on the speaker, usually a hole big enough for the speaker to sit in , which is slightly smaller than the speaker itself, if you but new, they usually come with a template.
or you can fit them on the surface, if the speakers come with a a spacer, or you can buy em online.

I've got both speakers off now and holy moly the s**t that fell out! Some rust, a business card, mud, bits of plastic and some money! I s**t you not! I think my new acquisition has had a bit of a past..!
There's spacers already in there so I'm guessing any 10cm speakers should fit, as the standard speakers are 10cm's across, not including the sticky out bits that the screws go through..?

Dashboard Speaker Upgrade Kit for LandRover Defender Edge ED204 4" Speakers | eBay
Decent, cheap to replace if they get damaged. Though personally I used them as little satellites for a more surround sound feel. I built a shelf that sits above and behind the front seats. Which house x2 10" Infinity speakers.
Might get some more to sit in the back.

I also have a pair of 6 inch pioneers in the back of my double cab as the main speakers and a slimline vibe sub at the back of the seats amazingly the sound is pretty good, very balanced betweenfront and rear, you can even hear it over all the defender noises at motorway speeds :-D
