Hey guys and girls, how many of you have installed sound deadening in your defender?

I'm interested to hear what you've done, what you used, and how effective it was. Im thinkin of installing sound deadening in the doors and floor of my 110, and installing a few more speakers, ideally one in each door card if they'll fit, not after the whole boy racer stereo thing, but would like to have stereo a bit more comparable to my audi a3. At the moment, I have two flimsy speakers in my dash, which I beleive are slim fit, so difficult to replace. They are pretty useless, missing out all bass and trebble notes, and probably giving the 40% of the middle ground.

what do you guys think?

u wont get decent speakers in your doors where does the window go? and how deep are your doors? and what happens when you close the door what would the speaker be facing?

Hadnt looked yet, but was hoping to fit speaker in the lower part of the door car, (the bottom is abviously a bit thicker, because of the outer profile)

If need be, I was thinkin of mounting them on collars, protruding around 10-15mm into the cab.

What about slim speakers?
The only other place I've seen speakers, is in the Cubby box, which defeats the object of having a cubby box!
I have a 9 seater, so cant really fit the speaker plastic trims in the very rear corners of the boot space.

Defenders just werent built for this were they!?!?
What speakers do the XS models have? Just the standard front two?

Just stuck some thick "lino" inside all the doors, floor, foot wells, boot etc but I don't know if it's made any difference to out side racket as mi clutch is fecked now :D

NB: nothing to do with the lino :D

How about overhead?
My truck cab came with 2 tiny speakers mounted in the ceiling thingy and they actually dont sound too bas as they are right on top of my head.
I was figuring on replacing them with something bigger, like maybe a 6".

Do you think the roof ceiling thingy would support the weight?

Thanks.

it wont work..dont even try..
if youve ever taken the door apart you will see how the winding mechanism works for the window, the speaker magnet will stop the window winding down..

Looks like i'll ust have to buy a set of headpones eh!
I dont have space in my headlining for speakers, unless I installed some sort of unit, like the ones people have cb's and stuff in.

I've just installed these

Alpine 4" (10cm) coaxial 2 way speakers from Halfords Price £34.99

they were a straight swap (but only just) I used existing mounts/fixings, Its much better but still missing the low end sound, I've been thinking about buying one of these: Pioneer TS-WX11A Subwoofer - Car Audio Direct

as it should fit behind the middle seat on the bulkhead and improve the sound.

I agree with you I dont want to scare the neighbours with a "dull thumping" or anything chavvy, I just want to listen to music properly

After seeing a mate do it in his truckcab, i got 2 6 inch 145watt speakers and mounted them into bits of 9mm ply which had been cut to size so they wedge in the corners of the tub just above the seatbelt reals. They work well, no problems with depth but due to the seats, some of the volume is lost. Routed the speaker cable down through the dash where the cables for the fag lighter come up, down behind the fusebox, under the transmission tunnel mat, along the side of the cubby box then taped along the bulkhead on the little ledge above the jack mounts and along to the speakers. didn't take too long at all and easy to access. If you want i can take some pics of how they are mounted.

Other places include in the rear bulkhead (involves cutting holes) doors, headling or even seen them in the front face of the seatbox but they get bashed and drowned easily.

Another mate made a wooden box that hangs from the lip where the roof side panels meet the roof, full width, hangs down by about 8 inches and is the same depth. That works well for mounting speakers and crossovers in if you are going that far. (Doesn't interfere with rear view mirror either) His tweeters sit well on top of the dash in the very far corners of the windscreen and then a few amps behind the seats and a huge sub in the back. He's now known as Pimp My Ride!

Hope that helps, Harry

yep they're the same size width and I used the original collars, They are slightly deeper than the originals but fit all the same.no need for drilling making new hole etc. and took about 3 minutes.

the only down side is that they don't come with the mesh covering so the speaker is exposed, I'm going to use some accoustic fabric to provide some protection from the mud and dirt.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. Gives me some food for thought.. Would've been nice to mount in the doors, but hey, nothings ever easy is it?!

i used to have some in the bottom of my doors tho they were right at the bottom and were foreva getting kicked and drowned. The speakers behind the seats work quite well don they harry. ;)
