I'm sad to say tonight is a tale of defeat.

Whilst I was happy to find the mounting rail for the sensor behind the bonnet, and was able to run the cable from there through to the dashboard, there's been no improvement at the instrument pack. The sensor is certainly working; there's a reading from the ammeter on both cables. I've decided to earth it on the bolt behind the steering wheel and the other one runs through to the plug behind the instrumentation. Something was already in pin 18 so I've soldered it on to that wire but didn't get the -30 reading as suggested in Nodge's bedtime reading.

At this point I think it's more likely to be a coding issue than a hardware one. Given that enabling the IPK Temp on the T4 didn't show an immediate result I'm wondering if there's a more stringent requirement than simply toggling that option to get it to show up

I did find some more complete instructions by someone who had a working temp gauge. I'll see if I can find it, as I'm sure it contains information about the T4 settings to use.
Leave it with me.

Here it is.

The last sentences are very interesting. ;)

I feel like I'm missing something obvious then, I've visited a T4 and enabled the option but nothing came out the other end

Do I need a specific ECU for it to output to the display, one from a NAS?

Presumably you do what it says to do about LCS coding?
Here's a screen grab.

The market icon shows ECE Market.

Hm, so it does. I neglected to take a picture of that menu for myself however and I can't remember what mine said.. I do know that both my ECU's read "00000000" on their GM numbers

Yes, on the T4 unit I went;

  1. Vehicle Configuration
  2. LCS Coding
  3. Page 2
  4. IPK Temp [Enabled]
It did the screens, asked me to change from grey to blue to grey cables etc. I even came out of that menu and went back in, it still read [Enabled] on that option.

..Wonder what model the author had?

Maybe it'll start to work after the temperature sensor has been measuring for a bit. That's what the author says anyway. He did 2K miles between pictures.

A TD4 automatic by the looks of the dash.

Ticking one of those boxes at least with a Td4 manual

I was also getting the impression too that he got something on the display right away once the option was enabled, which is why I'm suspecting the T4 session wasn't completed to the degree I think it needs, unless nothing came up at all before the 2k had happened but it was never mentioned

I've been supplementing my reading with The 2004MY manual and am surprised to find that they directly acknowledge the existence of the display on page 347 within the diagram, but not as part of the surrounding text.

More disconcerting is that in my printed Owner's manual that came with the car has a near identical diagram, but does not have the top row included with the temperature or snowflake; just the odometer/trip and the "sport" text beside the automatic gear selection reading. I wonder then if my instrument pack is truly the same part. Looking closely at the earlier PDFs some of the pictures of the back of the pack appear identical to mine in terms of the grooves cut out at the back, but some have far more which seems to be specific to that model.

I'm thinking I need to shine a bright light at the screen to see if I can see whether those 'pixels' are present, or perhaps find some way of getting the car to illuminate everything on the display. If those pixels don't exist we'll know it's the instruments and if they do we know it's elsewhere and we'll have to look at why they aren't being illuminated.

Are you not getting the -30° show up?

The pixels will be there, as they'll only make 1 LCD for all the Ipacks.

No, never appeared. Didn't appear after the T4 had been plugged in so I thought it might need the sensor itself to be inputting as well but it didn't appear then either
That sounds like the T4 session didn't update the Ipack. The display would show, even if the sensor isn't fitted, as it'll just show an out of range reading (possibly -30°).

Then I'm stumped for now, outside of the initial error

It still seems odd that the unit would've updated the option from disabled to enabled if it couldn't do it, and nothing else on screen seemed to indicate any other requirements. We went into a diagnostic bit as well which read the incoming signals to the pack but there was no indication of an ambient air temperature there

I don't know anything about T4. But my simple logic thinking brain suggests that the Ipack isn't being seen by T4, or it would show a serial number or version number or something.

Back to the garage tonight, order of business

  1. Try to identify incoming data to the instruments, and see if there's a new reading coming in.
  2. See if IPK Temp is still enabled in the LCS Coding area, hopefully it isn't and it was just the T4 software toggling without reading the updated settings
  3. Get through it all with a stable connection this time, and no empty IPK GM.
And if that doesn't yield a result we can start leaning towards 'impossible'

And that was that. No errors in write this time, but still nothing flashing up on the display. T4 is absolutely positive that Temp is enabled. No new information coming in to the instruments, just the regular stuff despite the addition of the sensor. I've ran out of ideas

First post now contains the hardware installation guide and everything we know about enabling it. If you do get a hold of the parts at least you'll know what to do with them.

Recent discussions have revitalised this a little bit.

Firstly I asserted early on that -30°C would show as a placeholder in the IPK when the option was enabled, this is now confirmed to be true and not getting a result will be an issue in the rewrite.

Secondly it's been said that there are various versions of discs for T4; disc DTL35X being the most desirable as it was the last one, and therefore the most up to date. Earlier discs may not be applicable.

Finally the 'North America' option is not required - UK market vehicles will be able to adopt the feature also.

So I need to find a different T4.. one on RDS v6.0. For context, I've been visiting a Rover/MG garage, and Rover/MG use v5.06.

What year does that T4 release pertain to? If I recall, there used to be a few eBay listings for T4 CDs: you may be able to get one and install it on the T4 hardware you have access to?
