My old defender was missing its chassis number due to the sheer amount of rust on the chassis. Just saying that there might be an honest reason why it's missing especially as the windows are etched with the reg details

Thanks everyone for the feedback, unfortunately didn't get any photos today to show, but will definitely get some up in the week.

I'm going to email the pre purchase inspector tomorrow with a PDF copy of the inspection I had done at the weekend and see what he has to say. From there, I'll make contact with the seller.

I'll keep this updated as things progress.

Swan.

You say that you have taken out a loan for the Land Rover, was it a bank loan or car finance? I suspect that it was a bank loan, but if it was some other type of finance, particularly if the vehicle is some sort of security against the loan, you may have a legal way out.
Do not stick your head in the sand regarding the possibility that the Land Rover is stolen, it is not worth spending anything on it if it is knock-off as it doesn't belong to you and never will.
If it isn't stolen then you need to know for certain and if it is, the longer you leave it the harder it will be to get your money back off the vendor. as I said in my other post, you need to get a proper stolen vehicle examiner to look at it.
You don't list the other faults with the vehicle, but the loose drop arm that caused your steering issues is not a major issue, once it has been tightened up properly.
If you want to post some pics of your Land Rover we can give you some idea how old it really is, for example if the 300tdi is fitted way back in the engine bay and bolted to an LT77 gearbox (reverse up and to the left) then things would look more promising.
It's a specialist lender I've gone to, not exactly a bank but the truck isn't up as security either.

I've had a full HPI check done and the vehicles never been reported stolen. It also has the reg glazed on the window, and I have a receipt for 1700 for the engine conversion. I may ask them why the serial number has been defaced on the engine, and take it from there.

I'll post a picture now of the work quoted as needing doing. Regarding the engine & gearbox, it's exactly as you described, whats the significance of this mate?

Cheers.

Things picked up at this weekends inspection, not picked up initially:

Swivel ball seals corroded/not effective
Rotted bulkhead in need of repair/replace (I knew this already)
Rotten footwell
Battery box completely rotten
Radius arm bushes ineffective including rear
Rear crank seal gone
Gear box fluid leak
Front and rear bearings gone - wheels loose & dangerous
Front hub bearings gone
Rear cross member corrosion
Rocker cover leaking
Steering box fault (as discussed)

Is the advert for the Land Rover still on line, could be worth saving.

If your engine is way back in the engine bay where a 200tdi would be. the fuel filter on the bulkhead and you have the LT77 gearbox (reverse up and to the left) then it is a lot more likely that you have a converted 200tdi rather than a rung 300tdi.

Depending on the price you paid all those points listed may not the end of the world. Even if you paid over the top they are all fixable.

Cheers

Reading that makes me feel better, I was prepared to save and pay £2k for a respray and I definitely don't intend on getting rid of the defender any time soon. I'll just have to delay the respray and work my way through the list!

Not really much wrong there, bearings adjustable, grease in the swivels and bulkhead you knew about.
A few leaks, they all do that.
Battery box, you can weld or just get the aluminium panels to rivet in.
A couple of bushes as well.
Bulkhead, battery box and chassis all go together as main rust spots but not difficult to repair.
200 tdi has normal belts, 300tdi has thin belts.
Depends on the price but inspector was pretty close, he cannot bash it all with a hammer, so rot is hard to find.
You own it now so 4x4 guys could tackle it with hammer etc to find rot.
It sounds like a typical land rover with normal problems we all face.
Pics and price needed but as rot is in bulkhead and you knew that, maybe you were expecting too much.

I have both engines and newbies seem to get the different front belts better than anything else.:)

Also depends on how you count...300tdi only has one....................
My 300tdi has 2 belts.;)
