until i installed an 'ad blocker' extension in my browzer ..

the famous-four ad animation still features .. can live with that :)
 
I think you are forgetting, ideally you will be going in a straight line most of the time when traction is likely to be lost. Sure this sometimes wont be as easy but I think the benefits of Diff vs the cons of scrubbing on a slow turn (as you would be going slow) are far more.

Anytime there is a difference in rolling circumference of a tyre there will be a degree of tyre scrub with the center diff locked. This scrubbing will lose traction. This doesn't happen in a Freelander so it's never an issue. Having done lots of snow and off road work in a center locked proper 4X4 and using the Freelander in similar conditions I reckon the Freelander is better where grip is very low or feels better anyway.

So, Td5 which does not have CDL but does have TC (and low range) works pretty good on the road and no bad off? Sorry, I'm trying to work all this out and have just got my head around TC as replacement for CDL in Disco.

A friend of mine has a TD5 with no CDL but TC. I've pulled him out of mud on two separate occasions where my Freelander hardly noticed the mud!! His TD5 just spins one wheel flashing it's TC light and making TC noises!!
Think about how an open diff works. All the power will go down the shaft with the least resistance, on an open center diff this will be to the wheel that has least grip relying on the TC to control wheel spin on that axle. On a Freelander the VCU acts like a CDL so power goes down to both axles then the TC controls the wheel spin on both axles.

is it true that it may still have cdl in the gear box but they've blanked it off?

My understanding is that an early D2 will have CDL but no lever set up to engage it. TBH I'm more interested in how it performs on the road rather than off. I want "safe in the snow/get out of a field" type performance but decent road manners. Should not quote but believe JM loves his auto D2. Thanks to you and Nodge. I'll shut up on this now and start looking for one - promise:)

I've heard that some TD5's don't have the lever assembly but the CDL is there. Sadly my friends is'nt there at all.
