To be honest mate, I reckon we don't have the same meaning for the wording "thinking"

.......................

All I would ask you to do is think more, genuinely sit down and work through things, rather than this knee-jerk reaction to ask others. You'll find it will help you in every aspect of your life.

I fully appreciate what you say... I do learn though. Really I do.

Turning it snorkel to face backwards makes perfect sense, but without experience I had no idea whether it was worth it. Maybe the slanted angle and lack of speed means water never enters it. I wouldn't know without either some mathematics or some experience!

You could say the sensible thing is to turn it backwards regardless of experience, but again, without experience, maybe that creates so much of a negative pressure it would seriously harm the MPG. Who knows!

I do learn - I just don't have the skills to work out air pressure, angle of snorkel combined with speed of vehicle and rainfall speed etc, etc, etc... so in these situations I need to speak to people.

Now that I have heard from people with experience, it all makes sense - turning it backwards makes no difference to anything other than the fact that it keeps water out. This I have now learned and understand fully!

My latest conclusion is what was said above -

Connecting my snorkel will create an airflow restriction regardless, so therefore it's best to leave my cone filter in place unless I plan to actually go wading!

I don't know this, I have learned it from the discussion in this thread.

I could never have calculated this or sat down and come to this conclusion on my own without, again, some mathematics and the airflow restriction, back pressure etc... of feeding air through a pipe such as this!

Therefore, without the ability to conclude this one, I have to ask more questions!

Is this still true despite it sucking in hot air rather than cold air the whole time? Or does none of this really matter and i'm being over-paranoid?

Maybe i'm being paranoid? Maybe not. If not, then i'll go to all this effort of sorting the snorkel only to find i'm permanently restricting airflow into my engine, shortening it's life and lowering it's MPG for no reason! Or maybe by sucking in warm air the whole time I'm harming the engine long-term by making it run hotter. I can't know without experience or questions - no amount of thinking will conclude this question!

Again, I do learn, and I can come to conclusions, but without some basic knowledge I'm stuffed.

Once I have knowledge, I don't tend forget it. I've come to my own conclusions with things in the past and screwed up - remember to treat me as a new Landy owner who's just bought his first set of spanners and never looked inside an engine (I'm not *quite* that bad, but pretty close) :D

Does your brain hurt? I think your thinking far too much! Manufacturers spend thousands developing inlet systems, boy racer ad dons generally screw things up and lose power mainly low down where a 4x4 needs it. Vehicle air boxes are usually designed to work well with the engine, remove them you usually loose power. Just put good filter in the standard air box, k&n whatever. You want a snorkel to go off road or for looks. Sticking 5 foot of convoluted pipe on your air inlet is going to be a restriction any ram air effect will be negligible and most likely lost through the twists and turns. If anything a bit of rain water will give you more power cos it actively cools the cylinder charge making it denser so more oxygen so you can burn more fuel increasing your volumetric efficiency therefore power out put! Never heard of water injection? Obviously you don't want too much that's why youre fitting the snorkel isn't it? Or do you live somewhere really sandy and that's why? Or is it for the school run!
Surely it's just a matter of, do I want a snorkel, yes or no, yes then fit one, no don't bother! That's the logical process I follow whenever I fit one. It works! Then when or if you've got one you can point the inlet anyway you fancy and measure you're fuel consumption to your hearts content rather than just driving it and enjoying it for what it is:)

Currently, under my bonnet, I have this (all done by previous owner):

A few questions...

1. If I buy this: Forced Induction Cold Air Feed pipe Kit Cone Ram Filter + 3inch Duct Flexipipe | eBay

...is that everything i'll need? I already have a drill and drill bits.

2. Did the mount it comes with do the job perfectly?

3. Why is this filter called "Forced induction"?

4. Is the cone filter inside it foam or cotton gauze?

5. Why is it called a "Ram filter"?

6. The snorkel I have on there already is a Safari snorkel with the "ram" air inlet on the top (see below). This will presumably force more air in the faster I go. Is that a problem?

7. And finally... is the "ram" inlet on top of the snorkel (see below) still OK to use with this setup when it's raining/snowing/etc... ? or will it just fill the air filter with water??

Sorry for all the questions, but as usual, i'm clueless, but want it done right!

Thanks if you can answer everything! :)

It's a gimpy air filter in a box nothing more. It's a waste of money. Chuck the stupid cone filter in the bin fit a standard air box with a good filter!

Why are you bothered about warm air in the uk not to mention it is fitted with an
intercooler if you where somewhere hot then ok fine.

But it seems you are trying to figure out the math behind it all if that's the case go ask a bloody scientist. A lot of Folk have given you there experience on it and ways around your setup but all you are doing is asking the same question just rephrasing it.

It's a land rover 300Tdi not a sports car.

If you are going wading then yup fit it properly if not then don't bother with it

Just remember its not just a snorkel that is needed

Go to scrap yard get the air box that is sapose to be there.
ditch the cone filter get a Panel filter i use itg personaly.
what you have there is a snorkel that has been fitted as said above turn the top roundto stop rain and snow.
get the most out of the snorkel fit the origanal air box and plum it to the opening in the wing with some sort of hose or pipe.
The cone that is on it is a cheep aftermarket coton gauze oil impregnated halfords pice of crap that is not a ram filter.
The top of the snorkel is an air ram but it offers no performance increase as it is a turbo diesel you have
Alternatively you can do what was done in post 12

See, he agrees

I have NO air box!!
Safari snorkel straight to turbo
So fitted the terrifirma sock for the top for an air filter.

Had it like it for months with no problems.

Blimey, this has moved on a bit since I last looked - what have I started

Anyways, I have decided to go for this type of top for my home made snorkel...

Land Rover Defender Snorkel cyclone mushroom top | eBay

Will hopefully avoid all the problems people are having with water getting sucked in from the front facing ones, and having to turn them around etc....

Now just need to get some pipe, bend it/weld it to the right angles and finish it off.

One of the snorkel manufacturers sells the correct angled sections and S/S pipe plus slight seconds of their products , cannot remember which one - southdown ring any bells ?

This'll be the boys ...

Snorkel Raised Air Intake Wing Mouldings DISCOVERY 1&2 | eBay

worth contacting them so you can assemble your own system from parts that you can position to suit and have them fit together to do the job the snotkil is for ....wading

me , I just want to make space for a big second battery on my road/caravan puller motor so its no biggie for my air intake to be through the inner wing as original just further back

Yup, sothdown do little bits to make up a DIY snorkel, but some parts are not cheap...

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

So am going to get a metre length of steel pipe, same diameter for £13.00 ;)

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Will probably get this though to make it look neater...

Have also just managed to get one of these...

for a couple of quid on ebay too - bargain :D

So slowly getting there......

ere guys...

what do you do with the vacuum pipe that was connected to the 300 airbox..

just put a 200 airbox on mine and no where for vacuum pipe to fit...

are they vital to engine operation?
should i block the open end so it dont vacuum water up when wading?
