Advice please if I may, Just bought a Freelander 1, 2005, TD4 to save it from the scrapyard. Engine starts and ticks over fine, as soon as revs are increased above 1800 rpm it produces white blue smoke. When driving as soon as the turbo kicks in, massive amount of white blue smoke. Crank case valve breather was completly blocked, now replaced. No splits in hoses, turbo solenoid checked and looks ok. Would i be right in thinking oil seal blown on turbo? Just wanted second opinions before I undertake the horrendous job of removal without removing the IRD!
I will also do an injector spill back test just to rule out a faulty injector.
Thanks folks

Sounds like it could be the turbo to me. Do the paper towel test.
Remove the elbow boost pipe, hold a while paper towel in the air stream, while a helper revs the engine to 2k RPM.
If there are visible oil spots on the towel, then there's too much oil coming from the turbo, which suggests the seals are gone.

Thanks for that, i will give it a go, however as the turbo pipes and intercooler are already oiled up, my guess is that this oil already present would cover the paper towel

There could well be residual oil in the boost pipes, but this oil will tend to stick to the pipe walls, and not get admitted into the air stream.
Oil flung out the turbo will be mixed with the air, so gets carried along with it.

So after taking Nodge's advice, I pulled the turbo hose (the rubber section that comes off the turbo) put the open end in an old cardboard box and revved the hell out of it. To my relief, not a hint of oil confirming turbo is ok and the trouble is residual oil dumped into the system via the turbo from the crank case breather being completly blocked. Just goes to show, a simple and cheap check can save money and a lot of time. And of course taking on board the good advice from Nodge !
Thanks all.
