Have you checked the injector pump timing?
Is there any black dust at the timing chest drain hole?
What about running your own fuel supply from a can direct to the injector pump bypassing tank lift pump and all the pipes et cetera
The cam belt was changed by a garage a week ago, no black dust visible and the fuel supply trick,I will try that at the weekend.

After you've removed inlet pipe on turbo and before you start engine, see if you can spin the turbo vanes round with a finger.
I have done that, and i actually thought at the time that the turbo should have been a lot easier to spin. That is why i took the pipe off last night again and it was spinning well on tick over.

But it has been running fine since the belt change, unless it has jumped a tooth. I have only driven it 12 miles since the belt change.
So have you been able to go faster than this ?
I see you have changed a lot of bits.
If you hold the pedal down does it die at all or just reach max restricited revs?

Have you got a boost gauge ? worth having IMO, and will rule out air leaks and boost leaks from collapsed hoses..

How does the engine sound when you rev it ? does it sound suffocated, or is it lean cutting ?

It just hits a wall when you rev it up, even when you do it slowly. Then if you give it more throttle the smoke starts..I noticed when i have been driving and i change down, the revs obviously rise, but the engine is just like a petrol when you turn the ignition off when driving,,,,,,,,,,,,no response.

Could it be a collapse of the turbo outlet pipe ?
My 300tdi had a similar (although not as severe) problem that was caused by the flexible turbo outlet pipe that had delaminated causing a constriction ....

Although i'm not leaning in this direction (it does sound more of an 'air problem'), another issue could be the FiP.
You can get it checked by Ribble Valley (Diesel Bob) for around £110

If you feel up to it i'm near Lanark and would be happy to have a look around the engine if you can get oit here ...

Could never get near Lanark, I have a friend George in Falkirk (expert) he is thinking about it...I am getting a compression test done next week.

I reckon 16yrs standing aint done that ip any good

On my 200 it would run on three whilst chucking out white smoke like a battle ship of old, then after 5 miles or so would chime in on all four running fine until next cold start, another pump sorted it, tried all sorts injectors/cleaners/filters/hoses etc etc.

Bet it’s a tooth out…

+1.

OP, Are the garage who did the job a LR specialist ? - it's quite easy to check the timing of the FIP through the inspection cover in the tc cover.. worth doing IMO. Even checking:) the cam timing isn't a mare of a job ..

Ran a separate fuel supply to Injection pump today......no change. Took off the blanking plate at EGR, and ran the engine.....no change
