My garage has said that the lumpy start and smoking is probably an injector on its way out, but that for 10 seconds of smoking, is not worth replacing them for the time being.
 
A friend of mine mentioned the injectors once but coukdnt see whythere was blue smoke

Going to take the inlet manifold off tomorrow if I get chance justto clean that out. Doubt will make any differance but doesnt cost out to try
 
this is very true the glowplugs stay on for around a good 10 seconds I fitted an LED to the glowplug feed so I can see exactly what they are doing!

an led light will only indicate power is getting to the glow plugs, you really need an ameter and monitor the current,

a quick / easy test is to unplug each glowplug , attach a wire on the positive side of the battery, and briefly touch the connection on each plug inturn , there will be agood spark/flash, if the plug is ok, if it is open circuit there will not be anything , if you have an ammeter, you could measure the curent usually about 8 amp per glowplug,

if you need to get a defective plug out , make sure you get a hexagonal long socket, if you try using a 12 point socket you are most likely to round the plug off if its tight ,

I tested all the glowplugs and replaced them all I just wanted a true reflection of when the plugs were powered up :)
 
Starting to confuseme a little

I havnt lost any oil since oil change yet thisproblem is still a cold weather problem only still

Car starts ok lumpy or 20secs max but after that its fine and goes aswell if not better than when I first got it.

changing the forth plug will most prob solve your problem , as has already been said it hasnt been changed because its the difficult one to get at , either change it or live with the 30 seconde of smoke
 
kev , dont you already have an indication on the dash to tell you the glowplug relay is on ?
 
yes but I wasn't convinced it was working properly so I just wanted to confirm that the power was actually getting to the plugs everytime and for the right amount of time so I thought it was probably the easiest way to get the information I wanted :)

Can this 1 plug cause this tho not exactky cheap to replace this last plug but sort of doesnt explain the blue smoke

Was going to order a pcv but is there a way to tell if my one is faulty

Would rather spend the £20 on something more useful if mine turns out to be ok

mat the very least you can do is test to see if the glow plug is ok, very easy to do using a lenght of wire , and yes a single cylinder not firing for a few seconds is going to give you some smoke,
if it is running ok when up to temp , i dont think you should be to concerned , although a full set of healthy glow plugs will certainly make starting easier when it really gets cold,
 
after using Autodata to find the Air intake temp sensor i took it out and cleaned the end it was a bit black and horrid like the manifold used to be before i removed the EGR

fitted back and started car had a little puff of smoke then nothing not even on first revs

anyhow i also come across this on Autodata and wanted to see what you thought

according to the data for the glow plug ,R= 0.8 ohm each glow plug should be drawing 15 amps
 
what i have is i came across this in the autodata i have and i testes 3 plugs i removed they all came up no resistance but when i used jump leads they were all glowing.... maybe my meter is playing up

Looks like normal water vapour with a bit of diesel fumes mixed in, normal in cold weather until the exhaust has warmed up.
 
Some days it can fill the street to extent ofiwnt to turn the thing off...

My td4 when I had It didnt do this and neither have my tdci's alsoa blokei no with same engine in a freelander doesnt do this
