Hi,

Just had my Series III MOT'ed and to pass needed a new Brake Master Cylinder ( Which has been fitted ). On the way back from the garage I noticed a lack of power, even more so on inclines. On reaching home ( 10 miles ) I noticed that both back brakes were smoking quite good and remaining partially one, hence lack of power!

The new cylinder was adjusted to the same position as the old one. None of the brakes have been touched. Am I right in assuming that it's just a case of adjusting the pushrod on the cylinder to ease the pressure and release the pads?

I'm a DIY mechanic, if you can use the word mechanic.....

Cheers

g'day i would have thought that if yer master cylinder was the problem then the fronts would be stuck on aswell. did you check to see the fronts was hot? pleanman

Hi, I doubt your master as well.
It may be that when it was fitted the system was not bled correctly, try re-bleeding and re-adjustment first,
10to1 this will cure.

Cheers all for the thoughts on the brakes....

I'm aiming to have a look at them tonight/tomorrow. I'll let you know what was wrong.

Need to get them working, Greenlaning this Sunday - Forest of Dean!

The first thing I would look at is to see if there is any slack in the pedal. If not then the valve in the cylinder can't let the pressure off thus the brakes would be dragging all the time. If like mine you have twin cylinders in the front brakes and a single in the rears then may be the rears don't need as much pressure to drag before the fronts. I had this problem and thought it very strange but the master Cyl was to tight and it did give me the same problem. If I hit the brakes the rears used to lock up and the fronts did not. I now have a 90 servo and master cylinder on it and have split the brakes from a single circuit to a Duel. The brakes are S**t hot now. Well worth doing in the long run......... ;)

Cheers All.

Still haven't looked at them yet. Had to go to the Landrover Show at Malvern in my Disco....

Miniman has hit up on a point when I moved it yesterday on the drive. The brake pedal is solid - you can't press it at all. Is this still a case of easing of the pushrod adjustment and re bleeding? I'm confused.....

I would be slakening the push rod if it is solid. I did the same mistake myself. The fluid cant return to the master cyl if its to tight and that means the brakes are on all the time. There is a valve in the master cyl that is closed when your foot is down (PRESSED) and when you let off it opens so that the brakes can return to the OFF position. You got it.

Funny. The other day on my return from Nelson I could smell burning paint. As I got out of the landy I found my rear drivers side wheel was smoking..

OOPS. Pulled it to bits and hey presto one stuck cylinder. Off to blackburn today for a new rear cylinder £6.70. I love landys so bloody cheep...:)

:) Well after many months of no activity I decided to tackle my brake problem. Now they have stopped smoking as have seized on completely! Further investigation by slightly slackening off the nuts on the end of the master cylinder freed up the brakes and they now work fine. A happy ending to this smoking problem! Thanks to all who provided advice. :)

Cheers

Not a prob mate. I did the same and it was the back brakes that was the problem due to the master cylinder....now you can get up tho's hills...:D

Glad you sorted the brakes & welcome chap, but since you're MarcusBrain & I ain't, does that mean I don't got one at all?

Hell, you guys have been right all along!

Yep, S'Alex, me' droog'!

Have been known to venture out in full Clockwork kit, ha ha...........Do tend to avoid kicking the stinky old drunkie in the gulliwuts , gulliver & yarbles tho'......jest for fun like, when I've a spare bit of cutter! Spare me the ultra, but the old in & out doesn't go amiss tho'!
