Guys. When I start my Defender 90, it bellows deisel smoke for about a minute from the exhaust before it clears out. The engine is a 2.5 TD 19J.. Any ideas how to tackle this, neighbours ain't happy!

Standard for a diesel on first start of the day or when it is cold weather,
Not noticed so much in warm weather

Do you get white smoke every time you start up, or just first thing?

Do you have any white smoke when you are running?

Thanks very much. Smokes on the first start only so that's sorted.. Although I drove to the Pyrenees last year and there was a massive discharge of smoke for about 5 minutes after first start while going up a track... I put this down to a punishing 900 mile drive.

As we are having a lot of cold, wet weather, it could simply be condensate from the exhaust as it warms up.

My 200tdi does similar, black though and not too bothered but not nice if parked up next to someone that's getting kids in car etc as they get covered

Mine went through a faze of putting put whitish smoke for a minute or so, especially when wet or a cold day. I poured in some injector/ engine cleaner and gave it a real good blast up the motorway for a good hour and changed the air filter, The problem went.

Nice one, thanks. Thought the engine was on its way out but seems the norm. Will try a new filter and engine cleaner. Great forum BTW, learning a fair bit about me tractor.
