Hi all !
Just a quick one , Ive got a 96 DSE, and is now well due for an service.
Recently its started smoking "worse" when kicked down.Mainly noticeable of a night in the rear view mirror!.Its always smoked to a degree and have been told this is because its chipped. But doesnt smoke at all during normal acceleration and cruising speed.
It doesnt use any oil,no strange noises, loss of power,MPG etc..So im hopeing a good service will make it good again..
Can anyone please advise the best Oil for it? Have read a post that states Fully Synthetic, but i thought this was thinner?
Will stick a Slick 50 in too..Cheers guys..

I always use Castrol GTD Magnatec however the last time i done a service i was told that castrol have stopped making it, dont know if the guy was just pulling my chain cos he didnt have any but its a good oil so if you can find it go with that.

Cheers for the quick reply!
Ive just found it on Halfords website.£20 for 4.5 litres..
Sorry for the dim question but, is there just 1 type for Diesel? If they are all suitable,my theory is the higher 15w40 is gonna be thicker..i.e not smoke as much as the thinner 10w40?

I think the 10w40 is recommended for our climate thats why i stick to it but remember that the sump holds 9.5 litres so you would need the 2x4.5 litres and a 1 litre bottle.

Mine used to smoke a bit on kickdown, as you have noticed, you see it more at night....normally fogging the car behind.
I've recently stuck two bottles of injector cleaner through the old girl, one tank full after the next and it's not doing it half as much.
Of course it could just be a lot of residual gunk in the pipes(inlet and exhaust) that needs a good 'italian tuneup' to blow it all out. Have you done alot of low speed cruising lately?

As for the oil grade, I was advised that the 5w40 fully was the premium option for my old oil burner, however the 10w40 was the acceptable alternative. Going to a 15w40 might be a bit too thick at lower temps..do you want to risk the turbo?
I use a generic brand 10w40 semi synth with mine, it gets changed every 6000 miles...what's in a name? I recently introduced myself to the local CAS and, with a friendly discount, managed to get 10lt of 10w40 Semi Synth and a Mann oil filter for £26 all in.!!!:)
I'm not even trade!!

Thanks for the replies guys!
Have gone and got 2 x 4.5l of the GTD Magnatec as advised..Everywhere round heres got it at £25 per can,but still need the extra litre. £8.50!
As i intend to do plenty of miles this year,im gonna give it a full service..So ive got the decent Oil,Genuine Filter,Pollen Filters changed and greased up!
When i brought it there was a Auto box filter and gaskets in the boot,So am gonna get a gallon of dextron and throw that on..
Can anyone please advise a good brand:- Engine Flush,Gearbox Treatment,Fuel Additive/Cleaner etc?Or is Slick 50 range still good to go with? + (it would make up the extra Litre of engine oil im missing!)...+ Maybe a K+N
Many Thanks in advanced guys, normally i wouldnt go the full way,but i gotta keep this Range for a while so may as well set it up right..
Cheers LTel

Hi all.
Are you sure that the smoke that you are seeing is engine oil rather than unburnt diesel? If it is oil it will be blue, If it's diesel it will be dark and could be caused buy an old air filter or overfueling (acceleration) or split air intake pipes. Changing the engine oil will not stop the diesel from smoking.

Cheers,Nick.

Hi Nick!
Thanks for the reply! The smoke is dark, not blue at all,and mainly noticeable of a night under acceleration.Ive gotta service it anyway,so will give it a good one (proberly the only one it will get)..
Had a look at the air filter today and it aint bad at all,,Standard so will proberly go to a K+N..I "Think" its chipped,so have heard that will make them smoke more as over fuels, but uses very little oil,and returns 31 ish to the gallon...
If i didnt have a concience for the guy following,or a rear view mirror of a night time,it would'nt bother me!!!
Cheers LTel

Worn injectors can cause black smoke too , if its thick black smoke then its unburn fuel , which would point to overfueling for some reason .If its more grey/black then its fuel which is burnt but not correctly (poss worn injectors)

Thanks for all the suggestions and replies people!!
Anna, it is Black smoke, but only really noticeable of a night? No loss of performance, and have been told that as it "could" be chipped, that would cause over fuelling? Sound right?
As i say,if i could loose the "guilt" of smoking out the guy behind, under hard acceleration (may not be as bad as it looks in the drivers seat!)..It would'n be a problem!!!!
Anyway , gonna see if a service helps at all..Got decent oil and gonna Slick 50 it,engine fluch etc...And put a couple of injector cleaner shots through the fuel.
Would'n bad injectors affect performance? Are they expensive to get serviced?
Sorry for all the questions folks!
