Just bought a 97 P38, and I can't believe how sluggish it is, it struggles to reach 70/80. Sounds OK, and drives OK at lower speeds, any ideas???:confused:

my diesel manual rips past 70mph easy

but think it may be chipped prior to me buying it

give it a GOOD dose of injector cleaner it did wonders for my D S E,mind you they,er not fast but mines drivable if a little slow but it not that bad ffs,,,,,,,dave

Which engine is it in the diesel P38? Its not the VM sack of ****e is it? P38s are very heavy too, my 4.6 one has a 10K engine in it and its still not particualy quick.

You need a very heavy right foot to make em go, but if it's not chipped, as gemsdad says fit a PSI powerbox.

Check there are no obstructions in the turbo pipes. With engine revved to 2000 or so the pipe into the manifold should be pressurised. If it is check connection of pipe from under manifold to MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure sensor) bolted on top of fuel filter. Check that this pipe is in good condition no leaks or obstructions. If this sensor is faulty correct fuel will not be being injected at high manifold pressure. This will cause loss of power.

Thanks for all the good advice, I have now gathered that the P38 2.5 Range rover automatics are;
1. Underpowered
2. Heavy
3. ****.

How I wish I hadn't bought the f*****r

Still too late and it suprised me when I aimed it at a very steep hill and bugger me, up it went., so not all bad, and the ride is very good. Looks like I'll have to get one of them chips, but which one??

just do the checks that you have been told about,then fit a psi powerbox,you can buy it new or get one of ebay.;)

Don't buy a Powerbox on Ebay, if it's second hand it may be there for a reason, ie. it's duff

If you just bought it when was it last serviced? And don`t take anyones word for it. Service it your self now then you know where youre starting from.
Just putting in a new fuel and air filter may cure your problem!
P.S. I`m no great shakes on autos, but change oil & filters here too, if no records of recent work.
