Just sitting here in the back of the Ninety Pickup, watch the sun set over Merrow, waiting for the RAC......

Few days ago, girlfriend phoned and said the engines went bang and then rattled and lost all power.....RAC recovered her home.

Took the rocker cover off to find no.8 valve push rod had snapped, had spares so replaced all pushrods and regapped the clearances.

Today, she phones up and says the engine is making strange noises popping etc and has lost all power again, but this time no bang.

So I am on the way home from work, by now, she has phoned the RAC but will be 90mins to 2 hours wait for a recovery truck, so I head to Merrow....she takes the Range Rover home and now I am sitting here in the load bed watching the sun set......

Will investigate later....but this is why it is best to have a spare car when you own a Land Rover product....we have a Fiat 500 that is the spare car, so if the L322 or the Ninety goes pop, one of us uses the Fiat....

Trouble is the L322 gearbox is hanging on by a thread currently, so hopefully that will hold while I fix the Ninety!!

The joys eh?

i rent a car transporter trailer.. £30 for the day. and throw it on the back of the P38. Rescued my sister's car when the clutch went a few weeks ago. i use one when the MOT's are due.

ant check the timing belt hasn't jumped or its lost/holed a penny on the top of valve spring/s

It's strange how part of the appeal of owning a land rover is trying to outwit their unreliability, I think it's either chess or land rovers ...

UPDATE....

Will continue this thread in the Defender section, but for those interested.....just had the Rocker Cover off just to have a peek-a-boo and the No.8 valve pushrod has snapped in half again??????????????????????????

ime for further investigate....Think Will is right, fuel timing out causing ignition before the valve has fully closed, the combustion forces the valve closed and snaps the rod....

Come on over to the Defender section to follow this or comment....

i doubt its fuel timing ,cam followers can stick in guide if guides worn, may just be poor setting

Tending to agree, if the timing belt has slipped due to iffy tensioner or just worn....then it can knock out the cam timing which can cause piston and valve to meet....

Have ordered new rod, new followers and brass thingies, timing belt, tensioner, front gasket, water pump gasket, crank oil seal.....

Already have new valve guides, seals, head gasket, rocker cover seal and half moon seals etc for a top end refresh.

So will strip the top end down and take the head off while I await delivery, fit the new guides and seals and then fit new followers, do the timing belt and tensioner etc and see what happens.
