Hi all

Having been a previous 90TD owner some years ago, i'm hoping to rejoin the LR fold with a Freelander, though having trawled the threads it would appear i may be insane...

So, been offered a '99 XEDi 5 door by a mechanic mate (his late father's), 31k (yes really) FSH, great condition, recalls done, for £2500.

Should I:

a) snap his hand off like i'm tempted to
b) spend more on a newer TD4
c) by something Japanese!

And can anyone enlighten me on the specifics of the inherant IRD/VCU problems - i know they die, but how? Can it be prevented?

Many thanks

£2500 will buy you a TD4, Deepender,Disco,Classic,P38, shop around cos prices will drop further as this recession bites

BUT the 1999 xedi will still be LOW tax, and is a VERY VERY good choice!

Yep, forget the other halfwit replies, Ste220 makes a good point & even though I love the Td4, you won't get one with 31,000 miles for anywhere near that price.
The IRD usuall fails because the VCU seizes, so keep regular checks on it & you'll be ok. Do a search on here & use either the tippex method or the jack up & turn the rear wheel method (handbrake off - should turn but feel tight as if the brakes are half on).
Roverron also sells a tuning box for this model for around £60 which boosts power from 98bhp to 120bhp which will give you slightly better performance than a standard Td4.
Good Luck.

snigger, chromie....

you know better than to say I've got even half a wit :D

td4 gaylanders aren't bad are they? as long as the doors stay dry?

Nice one chaps - just needed my arm twisting a teeny bit! Tuning up for £60 sounds good too, had briefly looked into this and thought it would be nearer £500!

And yes, the "should i buy something Japanese instead" was a wind-up - didn't have to wait long for a bite did I? lol :D

Hi Ed
Re worries about VCU etc you could always remove the props during the spring/summer months thereby greatly reducing the wear factors involved. Sounds like a good buy to me. D..

You're gettin too good at this, used to be able to wind you up easily, but yer right - the Td4 is brilliant. Trouble is, at £2.5k yer lookin at 131,000 miles Td4 wise so I do think his L-Series is a good buy.

Right, Boombox how about some more bull from you......

Strong money, but you have a warranty with it for piece of mind.
Check the small print on the warranty terms and conditions though.
There could be some sneaky get out clauses (check the ambiguity of the wording) which are not biased toward to you, the consumer.

NICE ONE ;)

they wanted £6000 told them I had £4.5k for it they are doing the timing belt and 5 new tyres as the old ones were low and full service including brakes road tax and warrantry took it up to £4996 I bought a bmw from them and had the same warrantry 4 claims in the first 6mth paid out no bother so I trust them
