Hi peeps

Bought the 300tdi last week for cheap money, high miler but very well looked after ( womens dad owns a garage so he maintained it for her ).

Anyway its got some slap! its not a " Thud " like a rear UJ worn its more of a higher pitch " dink " really hard to explain.

Been under it and give the drive shafts a wobble and the UJ's are in good shape, there is about a quarter of a turn play in the front drive shaft and if I turn it fast I get a quieter version of the sound. Seems to be coming from the front diff. I know the play in the shaft could be and will probably also be worn parts throughout the full front axle but just wondering is there an easy way to say yes the diff is fecked or no its not?

Can the slack be taken out by adjusting the diff in anyway?

I have googled this and some say no the diff cannot be " tightend or adjusted and others say yes " so thought you oil heads will put me right ;)

Ahhh so drive it with diff lock and no front prop meaning only rear wheel drive and hence if the slaps still there is not the front diff! Gotya

I am pritty sure its the front end tho but will give it a try

Well I have done 5,000 miles since this thread and still have the same noise, I have not tired it without the front prop yet BUT I have found out it does not do it while in diff lock, my mate whos into landys reckons its a nackerd/worn transfer box probably the gears in the middle diff. What do you reckon?

James is very knowledgeable and he sex what to try.if you think its the transfer box the replace it.pain of a job n heavy but go for it.or 8 nuts off the prop could solve your problem and easy enough job to change the diff

I also get that 'dink' u are talking about. I assumed it was pinions in rear diff so have been meaning to replace but now as I come to a stop out of gear or in gear it's like something is catching. Jut before the car stops it juddered and I can hear something grabbing. Any ideas? Got to be g/box or t/box right?

jack one wheel up and carefully feel play in the diff gears, feel the diff flange for play it should have absolutely none apart from rotational, ujs do need a very good look at

Hoping it is rear diff. It's been noisy as a lot of lash on it for a while. Just today it's started affecting drivability. It could be diff bouncing back an forth as coming to a stop just have horrible feeling it's the transfer. The problem I have is I need it as my daily driver so I can't strip everything as will need it for next day. Really need a back up car when u have one of these old land rovers. Lol

How long roughly does it take to replace pinion a James? Obviously I won't be able to do it as fast as u like but an idea of how long in lookin at would be good.

I'll take rear prop off go for a drive an if it stops doing it then I suppose that will tell that it is rear diff...... Fingers crossed.

Might be stating the obvious but have you checked the U/J's with box in nuetral and handbrake off?

Had a little glimpse but they are only about 8 months old an I've greased them numerous times in that 8 months so should be fine but I will check properly later.

Had a fiddle. I think transmission brake was dragging as I had it off the other day to replace oil seal to transfer box. But I think the transfer box is in its way. Pretty shagged so I'll be keeping an eye out for another one. Preferably a fender lt77 1.4

Handbrake may well be the problem. If it was dragging it takes all the slack out one way then power takes it all out the other resulting in a nasty 'clunk'
