am confused now, how can yer slate something by using facts?
where as you don't use facts, as daft has sed gaylander bits are more expensive and go wrong more often. how much is that black turny round thing that causes so many problems? compare that with a transfer box which will last for gawd nose how long.

but yer avoiding the main question here! should we inform those what ask, about the likely hood of having to spend lots of money or should we let them find out the hard way?

maybe, Slob - us wot spent our hard earned to find out - autta charge newbies fur our advice - consider it was a training course - an we can save them more than if they bought it?:D:p

or maybe they can send their bills to DH?

or YOU could list what went wrong andyer bought and how much it cost yer over a year

gets a bit boring after the 23rd time though - I mean not only me, but half of LZ can recite it off by heart!!

but the ones that have only joined to ask about them, the ones that need to be told dunt know. perhaps a admin type person could make it a sticky fer general nooby information

There is - its in the general Q's section - but then Newbies dont read wots in there - just fookin post!

Right if I remember correctly:

1. Replace Seat Due to stain not coming off due to incontinance
2. Replace carpet due to above
3. Replace engine due to you putting diesel in cuz you forgot
4. respray due to you parking in a motorbike sized space

were that all

What I meant was that if you have for example an 03 plate Freelander and maybe an 03 plate Disco or Defender then the repairs costs are not going to be much different.

However if you are tryin to compare a newish freelander with an 200 TDI disco then obviously the price of repairs are going to be vastly different. I would go to a salvage agent for my parts however if i am driving a newer car i would not.

You have to compare apples with apples not what suits your arguement

you only need to search on here and see how many petrol gaylanders needed new engines at less than 100,000 miles, then you can search the whole net and any where esle you like and see if you can find the same number of defenders than needed a new engine at less than 150,000miles. after yerve done that come back and tell us again how repair costs fer gaylanders are tha same as a defender of the same age

The Rover diesel ( L- Series engine ) is in my experience very reliable, if as with most engines it is serviced properly, ie fluid levels including gearbox and IRD
The other bits to keep a close eye on are prop shaft bearings, VCU,rear diff mountings, handbrake cable corrosion, plus as with most cars a number of other minor problems although other members will likely miss out the word minor, but I think they are great to drive, and would buy another one when I have worn this one out, it's a 98 DI with 160k on the clock.

The old L series un the td4 doozles is good motors and very good orft road ok it int gonna beat er defender [nuffink can] but its without doubt the best orft roader in its class and its a dream on tarmac un best on motorways , the 1.8 and v6 wer a disaster but there is a lot who have got over the dreaded hg problems and are still running. . . .question is wots the all new freelander 2 like . . . .is it a totally different set up [drive train wise] and is it any good ?. . . .

no - disagree Ming - yup the doozils are the best, but that is ignoring all the non-engine related problems - VCU, diff mounts, chassis cracks, etc etc.
