I bought my 02 Freelander new, it now has 65k miles, and I have had only one problem which just occurred this week, the ignition key locks-up when the wheels are turned a bit. Rotating the steering wheel releases the mechanism and the key is free to start the car. It is annoying
 
I've got a 2001 TD4 and in 18 months of ownership its needed two turbo hoses, 15 quid each. Other than that it hasn't skipped a beat. Chassis is fine, transmission is fine, brakes are fine, everything is fine. It frustrates me somewhat to see a thread like this filled with talk of buying a Defender or a Disco instead when obviously the Disco on the same budget is older and more expensive to run.

Defender not even worth a mention in this context. Substantially older and TERRIBLE in comparison on road. Just a shame that some members continually fail to comprehend that not everyone wants a 12 year old farm car when there are perfectly serviceable, sensible road vehicles to be had.

In answer to your question - yes you will find a car in your price range although you perhaps can't be so fussy on colour as black is quite rare. I see no reason why it shouldn't be a good, reliable car although you are well advised to check for the common faults, most of which are apparent on a test drive or quick look underneath.

"perfectly serviceable, sensible road vehicles to be had", and the gaylander isn't one of them. we all know you can get a good un but its a lottery whether yer get a good un or not.
why do you think so many are running about in mondo mode?
even the noo improved HG has failed after short periods?
expensive things go wrong and if you don't catch it more expensive things knacker.
if you want a sensible road car then buy a sensible road car
if you want a sensible off roader then buy a sensible off roader
if you think you can get the best of both worlds by buyer a 'soft roader', yer wrong
if you don't mind taking the risk of paying out 5 or 6 grand a year to keep yer self mobile then buy a gaylander.
 
So the answer to the question is 'no it can't be done' then - not 'by yersel a deepender reet pal'.

I'm frankly surprised that they're all that bad. Obviously being able to commute to work on roads every day and then go laning at weekends renders me very lucky.
 
you should rush out and buy a lottery ticket seeing as how lady luck is smiling on yer, or send some of yer exceedingly good luck to daft, as his cost him about 6K in a year or so
 
I have had three Freelander's, a L Series and Two TD4's and apart from servicing and a problem with the RCL on my 02 plate i have had nothing but pleasure from it.

It has been said early in this post but a Freelander is like any other car, you get some good ones and some bad ones but the childish abuse you so called proper Land Rover owners give it is so childish.

Like yer man said, some people dont want to drive about in an old farm vehicle and the Freelander is the only one in its class with real 4x4 credentials. And one major thing it has above all other vehicles like the slitties and wannabes is that it is a LAND ROVER!!!

Dont Disco's and Defenders have their problems too??? Yeh you know they do!

I know what i am talking about I also have an old 300TDI Disco and a 3 Dr Range Rover

So rather than trying to belittle us lot for supposidly not having a proper Landy just accept that everyone is different and like a different Landy because it suits what we need!

RIGHT RANT OVER, Don't you hate them petrol Freelanders! :)
 
yu also know that a lot of peeps on here have owned :eek::eek: Hippos and are only relating there experiences - and yup - all Land rovers are badly built and un reliable - but they are cheap to fix and do go orf road pretty well.
 
I sell cars (new & used) and I have to say it is a nightmare getting an underwrite on a petrol Freelander now. No one in the trade wants 'em unless they are at "three beans & a lucky bag" money!

The trade don't like cars generally for one reason mainly, 'cos the customers don't want 'em!

I am new to Landys but when someone here says you can get a Disco for similar money...do it! But surely that means you can have a "fk off" Defender for 3-4 grand and yer willy will grow 3 inches by the weekend! Mine cost me £800 and I get all sexual about it already, it's Landyporn! I can only imagine having another 2200 quid to spend on it!

so althought its well recorded that its all down to luck whether yer get a good one or not , you reckon we should encourage folk to spend their hard earned on a potential money pit? and that we shouldn't mention there's a better than average chance of needing a replacment engine when the HG goes, or that the chassis may crack or the expensive drive train may folk up.
and if you get over enthusiastic when yer washing it the rear window wont open or it will open then not shut.
most of the tratta faults are down to normal wear and tear on parts that are designed to wear out.
yer say some folk don't want a tratta , there has to be a better choice than something that could end up costing yer thousands, its a gamble and its only fair to the folk that ask that they be told

Your comments appreciated however if something goes on a similar age Defender or a Disco it could cost just as much if not more than a Freelander.

However, becuase we love the brand so much we take this into account when we buy the car whether it be a Freelander, Disco or WHY.

My arguement is that just because we choose to drive a Freelander rather than a Disco or Defender we should not have to listen to owners of other Land Rovers slating them on. Remember if it was not for Land Rover releasing the Feelander, they would not be where they are today. And no i dont mean up for sale before anyone adds that.

When I purchased my 06 Freelander, i went with the intention of buying an 03/04 plate Discovery however, i dont need to be able to tow or carry seven people and i certainly wont be taking a £14000 car off road (I'll use one of my old ones thank you) so i plumbed for another Freelander.

Really? So like for like repairs will cost me as much on a Defender than a Freelander will they? That's hard to believe?
