Hi all
Got an issue with my freelander TD4 54 plate with 145k on the clock.
She was smoking a lot for a few thousand miles recently, not great power and the consumption was 360 a tank.
Read some of the posts and put Redex in the tank for the last 1k miles. Also changed to premium fuel. Well this certainly blew the cobwebs out! Better top end, will pull 90+ with ease and seems to be revving more freely. However down side is difficult starting and lots of smoke initially once started combined with very rough running until engine reaches about 2k revs then the smoke clears (but sometimes continues). The engine feels lumpy at low revs - hence shaking feeling and rattly engine.
The car does sound noisy, so wondering if the exhaust is leaking - would this affect starting or cause white smoke? There is a constant "stinky diesel" smell that I used to associate with diesels.
Have noticed the thermostat reads below half way and does not get above this.
Works done to the car includes: Egr bypassed; filters replaced; recent oil service along with filter; Silicone hoses; bmw PCV installed.
In relation to fuel, going back to supermarket made the smoking a lot worse as did Esso premium. Shell V-power is good but feel BP Ultimate is better.
I am going to book the car into the local garage next week but reading other on-line posts/blogs there seems to a lot of people who spend a fortune trying to rectify the smoke problem to no avail.
Any initial thoughts? I like the hippo for the versatility it provides especially when camping on our family hols. Next holiday just over a month away and would like to remedy the smelly smoke problem - will be pretty unpopular with the other campers when I start up!
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
