.....As that'd be the second time in two days! Yep, my beloved RRC 300TDi is dead...Ok it's not dead but with not a straight panel in sight after being run off the road by an overtaking arctic the insurance company will certainly think so :( shame as it was just about finished ( recon R380, recent engine, brakes, allard intercooler the list goes on and on ) mates who've seen the upside down photos also remarked it's like new underneath although perhaps best viewed from an inspection ramp??....So my Q is this, I picked up the replacement yesterday which is a very pretty 2.5VM TD ( time and funds couldn't stretch to a 300TDi and this one is VERY nice ) it drove 400 miles without overheating so that's a good start! The turbo howls a bit so that's gonna need replacing ( if anybody has one? ) but the gearbox etc all feel really tight. What it does do though is get a wiggle on in a not so good way...It's not really speed or RPM sensitive it just wobbles through the steering wheel quite violently then goes away? It also tended to want to follow the lorry tram lines on the motorway...There's less play in the steering than on my previous one and although they maybe out it's too aggressive and slow for wheel balancing so I'm just a bit stumped?

No I don't think so....It's not constant or speed related, just shakes then stops?...Could be 20mph could be 50....Just noticed fair bit of play in front bearings, so think that's a good place to start!

howling turbo means nought..dont replace cos of that..

Did they just sound like that anyway then? I've always had TD's of one sort or another and am used to them whistling rather than sounding like a strangled cat!....Doesn't blow black smoke or anything....Any ideas on this aggressive random wheel shake? Anything obvious I should be aware of? Tends to go away when cornering left...Thinking of transferring the 300TDi when the insurance company release or should I just make the best of the VM? Been told swapping the whole body over would be easiest if I go down this route, anybody mid devon based who could do this as I don't have time or equipment ( oh and skill ) any idea of costs? Cheers

Not a view i wanted to see :(

I realise this was some time ago but what was the outcome?

The desire to follow the truck ruts is normally a geometry issue.

The rattle, I assume it's that 5 second judder through the whole front that can usually be triggered by a modest pothole or road imperfection?

Have you checked the bushes on the panhard? If they are worn they can cause issues similar to what you seem to be describing.

What was a 2.5VM?

4 cylinder turbo diesel engine, think from memory they were Italian manufacturer. Range Rover fitted the 1.9 initially (a right gutless motor for such a big car), then they went for a 2.3 and finally a 2.5. Mine was a great puller (topped 90mph on the motorway past Valencia towing an 1800kg twin axel tin tent) but they were prone to overheating the centre two cylinder heads (four individual heads). Same engine fitted to the Jeep but with a single cylinder head and they never had a problem.:) Hope you were sitting comfortably:D There was firm that fitted a 6 cylinder VM into R/R's.

Yes, it was an Italian manufacturer, VM Motori S.P.A. owned by Fiat Chrysler Automotive. Latest engines from this company are fitted to London taxi's and the latest Jeeps

OK. Odd, 90mph doesn't sound a lot these days.

I think I've just read Horse_Apple asking himself a question. I've had a few beers though and I might be getting confused.

I was just adding to my earlier post. Seemed logical last night. Looks a bit mental this morning. :)

Got you. I did have a look a while back but I'll check again and see if matters have deteriorated.

I think I remember seeing a complete bush set for the underside of the P38 for not much money on the Island website at some stage. Was probably Britpart but you cannot cock-up a rubber bush, can you?

Don't you believe it, I have just fitted poly bushes to the radius arms so will see how they last. It now steers where I turn the wheel .:)

It didn't before?!

Well, I grabbed the panhard rod and yanked it about as hard as I could. Rock solid. I cannot see the bush. Anything else I could try? Breaker bar, maybe?

I can see the rubber on the antiroll-bar. It looks like it is starting to crack so presumably all the others will be too.

The bushkit I saw on Island is £40 but it is all poly and is Britpart. Think I'd prefer rubber in that rubber will absorb more vibration from the road, won't it?
