Hi,

I would appreciate your opinion on whether I should get the car serviced and my local garage (LR Specialist) or do I do it myself.

It's not a case how difficult, but £££. The car has Full History with it, log book nicely stamped etc... But is it really worth it, basically your paying for a stamp in a book.

My concern is, would it deter people away when I eventually sell it, or would the receipts for the parts be enough?

Thanks
Jay.

I always said that I would never buy a P38 without a FSH and I didn't. To encourage me to buy one without a FSH, it would have to be cheap or I would have to have faith in the current owner. I would have to be convinced that the current owner fully understood the difference between a doing a proper service and just changing the oil and filters.

The problem with home servicing is that too many people think that all they have to do is change the oil and filters and that's a service done, so therin lies the problem for me at least.......

I ran a 4.6 for 8 years, the first 2 years i paid £1000 a year for servicing, they always found other problems ! Then paid 1600 to get the suspension fixed, they never did after 4 visits. Made my own suspension controller, cost 40p and never let them near my car again. Its gone now, bless it and i have a 2004 90xs, love it ! Oh, i also have a TVR !!!!!

Its a griff 500 that actually gets the BHP(340) but its cost me 10k to get it and its back with the engine people, again !! Ever wished you had left something standard !!!(275bhp)

P38's ARE GOING FOR PEANUTS AT THE MOMENT AND DONT LOOK LIKE the price is gonna go up so save your money and do the general stuff yourself i.e pads brake fluid ,coolent, oil filter, air filter etc,but if you develop another more serious problem it wont be because yu have serviced it yourself as most rangerover garages give your car to the trainee's to service anyway,if you feel there may be an underlying problem at any time take it to your local m.o.t garage and get them to check it over or pay and get it put on a diagnostic machine here and there, i can understand taking it to the dealers if your range is worth 6-7 grand upwards or couple of years old ,dont do it,
all the best

Thank for the replys,

Ive done approx 8K this year, change the oil twice, and just fitted a K&N panel filter.

The car has a list which I believe to be a rear hight sensor, but that will be looked at with the MOT.
Iv'e gone from a series 2 to this so I understaned most of the car. in the year that iv'e had it, nothing has happened apart from a loss of coolant which i cannot trace. It's not much, approx 1/2 pint every month. The top hose is not under pressure, the return to the expansion is constant. Ive has the compression checked the heads, the passenger footwell is dry, its' had a new rad & water pump.

I did pay more for the car when i purchased it because I didn't know P38's, so i purchased it from a dealer who took my S2a hybrid as partX and I did pay the top wack for the age, but every thing works perfectly.

I think i need to contact LR to find a list for a 85K service, because other than a diagnostic check all the other fluid levels are ok. Do LR change diif oils, regrease UJ's etc... on services?

Regards
Jay.

how easy is it to change the brakes?

mine need doing and arent too sure whether to pay a garage...? bit skint at the minute :(

how much would a back street garage charge on average for a full service...?

i did all four of mine, had to refurb ALL of the calipers, the little slider that balances the pads had seized on all four of the calipers and needed freeing using heat!!

but if thats not the case on your p38 then the rest was a piece of ****, just same as a normal car and the pads were 18 quid a set, i change the pads every 12 month so i wasn't gonna get anything expensive like the minteq pads that were on and had been for some time by the prev. owner

oh and if there is a problem then the calipers on a rover 75 front are the same!!!

This year, very low oil pressure, cam bearing "swung" ! Last year lost compression ! Should be back soon as its been 4 weeks.

He bought his as a trade sale

this is what we did

cap, leads, rotor, plugs
reset the ignition timing
re sealed oil pressure switch
re sealed engine sump
replaced crank pulley (someone had messed around with it before and cross threaded the bolt but instead of backing it off he just bodged it in) we had our high power (2500nm) air gun on it trying to undo it and it only just did!
de cat manifold pipes
de cat y piece pipe
new manifold gaskets 3 times! (first 2 were the cardboard gaskets)
new front main seal
alternator
starter motor
both lambda probes
new flexi pipe
steering rack boot
and tracking

1 years motoring

you are not alone

any tutorials online you know of?

Range Rover called me today to say my calipers are fine but the sensor needed replacing (which i knew about) £29!!!

Thanks for the intresting replys:blah: :blah:

The car has done 84K, In the last year it's covered 8k with 2 oil changes. I dont need an air filter (F&N Fitted) or pollen filters.

So the service will cost me 270 +VAT.

This is what they will do!

RENEW
oil filter
ADJUST
Handbreak
CLEAN
sunroof drain tubes
CHECK
Seatbelts
instruments
switches
horn
interior lamps
wiper blade
screen wash
instrument illumination
hazard lights
lighting system
headlights
engine oil leasks
gearbox oil leaks - topup
Front & rear diffs - topup
Transferebox - topup
steering / rack
PAS
suspension joints/ seals gaiters
tighten suspension mountings
air suspension
exhaust system
breakpipe corrosion
fuel system leakage
underbody condition
wheels
discs & Pads
tyres
Battery - topup
Clutch, break, pas, coolant topup
belts
locks & hinges
headlamp alignment

LUBRICATE
sunroof guide rails
propshat splines
wheel spigots

Roadtest.. and waste £10 of petrol

The car is also due for an MOT. s if most of the service is checking which is covered on the MOT that alot of money to have a guy tell me that my clock bulb has gone.... I wouldn't mind if they checked the computer..

I am very tempted to change the oil and have it mot'd

Mot is no way near as thorough as lr service mate and they'll only check brakes if they can see them through the wheels and they wont lubricate anything(prop shaft is important) or check fluid levels, diagnostic system etc

from what i can see only about 30 % of the list will be cover on ther mot but wont be rectified it will just fail the test
