Sorry, this has probably been done to death in the past but in my defence I am new to the site!

I've started working on my recently resurrected Series 2A V8 but the tyres (tubed 7.50x16 SATs) are so cracked they are only fit for the skip. I would like to replace with something similar (traditional looking) and the nearest I can find are the Deestone or Security ML814 tyres in 7.50x16. The Landy is primarily going to be running round a farm so not too worried about road manners (unless truly lethal!).

The other alternative was the Avon Rangemaster (not really a mud tyre?) or General SAG.

So, any recommendations please?

Those are good for trucking around fields but noisy and crap on the road, not lethal at normal series speeds but pretty slippery in the wet.
Rangemasters are pretty good allrounders.
I just put some Radar Renegade 265/75/16s on my series 3 ex mil and they seem pretty good in field and on the road. They are on 7j rims and also look awesome.
 
The Deestone extra traction I had were hard tyres, good off road and could not see them getting damaged at all with tough sidewalls but very noisy on road
I replaced them with rangemasters. Quieter better roadholding in wet and dry and suit me as I’m on road most time
For farm use I’d go for deestones have I Heard the tread is self cleaning
 
The security look good, and grip well off road, but bugger me after a drive in the wet you will be the local drift king!
6.00 look cute on an 88, but no good off road as diff clearacne to limited.
 
Range master is a brilliant all round period tyre. Great in snow and off road but not aggressively so.
 
I run tubed michelin xzl's on mine, again not a problem at series speeds, reasonable in the wet and off road, as well as having a more traditional look for a modern tyre. They are also fairly easy to come by second hand if price is an issue for you.
 
Think my 92 Defender came with Rangemasters as new from the factory (we’ve had it that long!) so they’re a good tyre if Landrover fitted them as standard

Rangemasters are good. Good Year G90 have a bit more tread. Fedima Maxima are quite a good mud tyre, and cheap-ish.
All available in 7.50R 16.
 
Rangemasters are Ok ish- deestone are excellent on wet and muddy grass- I fitted them to my vintage lorry and now damp grass doesn't stop me!
 
Hi, if you are on a wet grass surface with heavy traffic - like an agricultural show- there is a point before the grass breaks down and it is covered with a thin film of liquid mud and grass that is so slippery many vehicles struggle. (remember Silverstone?)
the deestones , in our opinion, are bloody good at that and will enable movement that stops the avon rangemaster. Noisy on road- but after a busy showyou want to get off the field and home!

I wish the bus I went to see Deep Purple at Knebworth in had em on......
 
That kinda say's it all; if your a trailer queen then go for grip in the show ground and to and from your trailer and be sure to look "period" but real world? Low road noise, wet grip, handling then you need a modern tubeless 235/85 16.

Disagree with that, my xzl's are 750 and tubed and are quite happy on the road. Tubed vs tubless has no bearing on road performance, that is more to do with construction and tread pattern.

Do they stick out of the bodywork? Are you running aftermarket wheelarch flares?

Personally I'd fit something good. "Traditional" means pretty much bugger all tbh. Not as if a V8 Series is factory spec anyway.

If you want to stick with 7.50's, the BFG KM3 is available in this size. Very very good tyre.

If you don't mind changing rims to Defender or aftermarket. There are loads of 235.85R16 tyres that you could consider.

My point (not very well explained) was that once you go to 6.5" tubeless rims you open up a huge range of choice for tyres with many more advanced and specialised tyres. 235/85 16 is the default off road size so every tyre has that size as an option and having spent a lot of time researching this recently (as I bought 4 new tyres) in general the 235/85 16 size is a big seller so you get very good value if you shop around.

All that is true. But metric size tyres aren't right for a Series, they are too wide, and have too big a footprint, for manual steering.
What was specced on a Series were 6.00 x 16s, or 7.50 x 16s.
The 6 inch tyres are a bit skinny for a V8 powered vehicle, so I would think the 7.50R16s would be an excellent compromise.
