Hi please can someone with more experience than me tell me if it is possible to replace the rear crank oil seal without removing the engine or crank on a series 3 2 1/4 petrol engine? I have removed the sump, gearbox and clutch. Just need to remove the flywheel but not 100% sure if it can be replaced without removing engine. I hope it can as I don’t really have the equipment to lift the engine out. Thanks in advance.
 
I didn’t like changing mine with the engine out, never mind with it in. Looks very tight down there. Probably easier from below as you won’t have to sit on the rockers to reach it :confused:
 
I have done this twice now on my 5mb and the mistake I made was not removing the flywheel housing the first time, replacing the "O" ring behind it and fitting the main oil seal while the housing is out make a huge difference, the first time I didn't remove the housing and just pressed the new oil seal into it, worked a treat for ten minutes and then started to leak again.
I believe you can also up your chances of success by getting as good quality oils seals, I did mine with the Indian made ones, the second time round its kind of ok, the flood has been reduced to a few drops every now and then.

mines leaking from flywheel drain plug, can't do engine out myself due to various health issues, can someone advise on rough cost of engine out, oil seal, & new clutch ( I have new clutch kit so just installation )
I know an oily spanners garage :) who I trust to do the work, but just need to know roughly how much it SHOULD cost before i go to them, any help appreciated.
 
Luckily never had to have mine in garage for work , so no idea really, I would guess the work involved would be around 8-10 hours if I was working at home, in garage with fancy equipment may be a bit quicker and then rate per hour ? £35- £60 but that’s a guess.
pablanchards do have the original dowty seal for 5mb at good price.

but take it in see cost you can always get other quotes, how much black oil is leaking
 
with a bit of help did the gearbox, transfer box, front diff & engine oil last week, have ran the engine for about an hour since, nice puddle of oil about 6 inches across next morning, moved landy back a foot, next morning another puddle same size under flywheel drain hole.
 
Yep, found a plug to fit. I'll have a chat with the mechanic this week, painful but the repair needs to be done I suppose, do clutch at the same time.
 
Just seen this from a thread from earlier this year. Looks like it's on a 90 not series but similar I suppose.

For the new seal to be fitted and a new clutch (may as well get it done while the engine or gearbox is out) they've quoted me around £1900! As I try to avoid using garages as much as possible as I mistrust most I don't know if this is massively excessive or about average?"

hope mine's considerably cheaper, no way I can justify or afford £1900, recon engine would be cheaper :oops:
Sounds like that price came from a Land Rover 'Specialist'. That probably adds £800 to the bill straight away. I've just realised you're in Spalding. We used to live in Little London before moving to Lincoln. I'm way out of touch with the area now. I'll bet if you try that local garage of yours you'll get a way more sensible price or they can point you to someone who can do it.
