My replacement SP panels galvanised frame rear door to my series 3 is about ready to sit. Do I just undo the bolts that go through the old door and hope that they are in exactly the same place on the new door? Or is that extremely unlikely?!

It's really odd. You'd think that the likes of SP and Richards would be red hot on dimensions, but in both cases I've found inaccuracies and not heard a peep when I'v emailed and told them.

Oh! Well that doesn’t sound very promising! Is it tricky resetting the hinges where they attach to the body or is it just a patience thing…..is there a procedure for doing this or do you just adjust as you go until it fits?

There's a lot of jiggle room in the hinges. I get very anxious about trying to get gaps and alignment perfect but you can't. Don't drive yourself bonkers like I do. Jiggle it, shim it, twist it and get it to a point where you can live with it. Then if one of the rivet counters comes along and says it's not good enough just punch them in the neck.

Just thought if the hinges haven't been off before you will probably need some of the captive nut thingies that go in the door pillar and some new screws with the big countersunk head that you can see in the hinges. There are two types of screw I think, one longer that the other. Loads of grease on them when you reassemble so it's easier next time.

Tomorrow is fitting day. I sprayed my rear quarter panels today with cellulose. I am spraying outdoors. Although it was about 15 degrees the paint still seems to have bloomed…..hopefully when I cut and polish it the bloom will be removed.

The reason for that, I believe, is they are just as accurate as land rover were on the production line. These were hand built vehicles and lots of shims etc were used to get things to vaguely line up. if you measure two theoretically identical vehicles you will find differences in dimensions.
