Most folk class the series vehicles as the early Landrovers, but obviously there are also series for the Discos as well.
Generally if anyone says they have a series 2 and no other reference its likely to be a Landover series 2 and not a disco

Incidentally if you have a look on the back of your disco it will (should?) have a "Series II" badge after the word DISCOVERY and the rear lights are higher up the pillars (excluding the inidcators and fogs in the rear bumper)

Series 1:
Very square, lovely looking machines (this is a later S1, the earlier S1 had the headlights behind the grill, this one also has indicators. I really should have found a proper S1.)
Series 2:
Bit more curves, note head lights still in middle, not on wings, also has different door hinges to the Series 3 (amongst other things) If you can see inside the Bulkhead is also massively different
Series 3:
Headlights now in wings, but, radiator grill area is still set back, unlike on a more modern defender.
All have leaf springs (unless someone has modified it)
What you have is none of these. It is a D2.

That's a Discovery II series 2 otherwise known as a Disco II "facelift".
would it be confusing to mention 2As in this conversation at all?
Not in the slightest, in fact it's a 2a i posted a pic of.
However, it might get confusing to mention a 2b...

True - I just need to ditch the box which causes the spotlights on th A-bar to be intermittent
