I'm just not a fan of the older style of auto boxes, and being an ex-biker I still like to play with heel/toe and clutchless changes, but I'd love to put a VW DSG gearbox into it, although I think that the cost would be terrifying even if I did as much of the work as a small machine job would allow.

As far as stronger is concerned though, I like to think that my refurbed R380 is as more or less as strong as the rest of the drivetrain. Following @jamesmartin 's advice I tracked down a K suffix, which is the best of the variants. One of the more interesting jobs will be sorting out the best lever linkage for it, and I really really love what Köenigsegg do with some of theirs...

Anyway, the Jaguar V12 wasn't exactly famed for fuel economy - and this car is going to not only weight more than an XJ12, but the aeros are really going to ensure that I'll have to save up for a month before starting it, let alone using more than 20hp!

Actually, as I wrote this I've realised that what I'd really want is a strong CVT box so that I can drive everywhere at 3,000rpm pretending that I'm flying a Spitfire with a Merlin.

I'm not sure about VW DSG, there seemed to be a heap of trouble with the system - may be it has been sorted out now.

Have you considered Megasquirt / some form of programmable EFI? Lots of larger engined Mercedes owners have reported that using Megasquirt instead of the old fashioned continuous injection systems they can now afford to drive their cars again. These days you can even buy self learning systems. They are often in the "gentleman racer" price bracket as you put it but it seems some people find cheaper ways. (If this appeals then modifying a flywheel to have trigger wheel qualities might be worth considering at this stage in your project)

As for the older automatic slush boxes - sure I can understand why you might not like that - but there are loads of other transmissions out there that would perform a whole load better - but I don't think a strong enough CVT gearbox would be within a DIY budget price range...

Yes, re: the DSG, the pub experts all said that about Alfa's Selespeed as I was buying one - 'more time in the workshop than on the road etc etc..'. Mine was perfect, and even better when AR did a free software upgrade.

But this is a 'lottery discussion' so I have infinite cash and if I can get a few thousand miles out of them that'll be fine.

I'm building it with the standard briefcase-sized ecu for the sake of simplicity (?), but with every intention of going modern. Kind of hoping that Dave of six wheel Disco fame will have one of his units available by then.

An exciting day today. For an anorak anyway.

Drew the flywheel

And then went to see the cnc clevermillingandstuffandIreallyreallywantone machine turning it into a real thing.
