With today's delivery I now have enough parts to draw up some chassis modifications and get one on order. Will Richard's melt down when they see the drawing?

It's going to be what I might have designed if I'd been shown the SI and II and asked to jump forwards two models. After a few beers.

An engine. Jag 5.3 V12.

Which is really quite big.
 
TOP PLAN! I'm fairly sure someone did this many years ago with a series 3 - one of the land rover mags did an article on it - the guy had to widen the chassis [and of course the body] just to fit the V12 - IIRC he built it in a layby outside his house........................
It's tempting to think GM saw the article then came up with the Hummer.................... I'm clearing the house, IF I find the mag I'll let you know....................................
 
I suspected that I wouldn't be the first to fit a V12, but pretty certain that one or two other features haven't been combined before! I'd love to see the article if you can find it.

I need to move the alternator, which you can see bottom right, up to the top in the V where the aircon pump now sits, and on the other side is the pas pump, which I don't need. Once they're off it'll fit quite easily between the rails. The snag is going to be the exhausts, but I have a plan and now that I've got it here I can get accurate measurements draw it in 3D cad to make sure that it all works.
 
Cool - what trans are you planning? Leaf or coil springs? Don't hold your breath, I may be able to find the article but it was years ago............ late 80's maybe early 90's - good luck with it

now you have said that about an article, I have a vague recollection i read something in lroi once but it must be over 15 years since I stopped subscribing

There was a Lightweight with a v12 a good few moons back!

I wondered if that was the one Waldamar mentioned and had a quick web search and got distracted to find that Overfinch did an RR with a BMW 12, and this chap's put a Jag one into an SIII which doesn't seem to move. http://landybay.co.uk/videos/v12-land-rover/ and I'm not entirely surprised because there is quite a lot of head scratching needed.

http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/photoWebPages/JagRover.htm might well be Waldamar's one, which is certainly widened. Gosh. Hope mine looks better than that!

Someone on landrovernet asked if it had been done back in 2004, and I think he was a Lightweight owner, so maybe he did it?

Today I actually feel like I'm making progress. Up to now I've been buying bits, taking them apart and cleaning them, and consulting parts books and ordering replacement bearings, seals and general stuff. I haven't put anything together yet, and am getting fed up with that.

I picked this lot up after blasting and got it home and sprayed - lovely sunny day for it, all steel painted with Zinga and the alu bits primed with a two pack paint.

Next job with that lot is to part-build the gearbox with the input pinion 'too tight' so that I've got an accurate centre to fabricate the new bellhousing. Plan A is to (very slowly) weld the 300tdi housing to a section of Jag housing that I've milled down to the right length - with the engine standing on its nose and the gearbox suspended above. If that works I'll have a complete engine/gearboxes unit to hang in the chassis (when it arrives) and fabricate some mounts. If it doesn't, there is a plan B!

I've got the engine stripped down to its essentials ready to shim valves and replace all the perishable bits. It's a lot less intimidating with all the gubbins off. I had been like a kid when it arrived and wanted to start it and hear it, but the ECU took a bit of time to track down and I'll now wait impatiently.
 
Disappointing day. Just about to bolt on a swivel ball when I spotted something odd. If you look at the axle in the image above you might notice that you can see an anti-roll bar bracket at the far end. But not at this end.

Bother. The radius arm and anti-roll bar brackets are on the wrong way round. Fifty-eight more English pounds to LRM. Extra cutting discs ordered.

What I'd really like is someone else to blame.

On the positive side, the chassis is coming on Thursday.

Unfortunately too big for the lathe I use, and by chance the R380 input shaft won't fit through it either, so that's being reduced to fit the Jag spigot bush by the same chap that I visited today. Flywheel will then have to go away for balancing, but I should be ready to join engine and box in a fortnight. So two weeks to overhaul the engine.

Once they're together I can finalise the mount positions, decide where to put the bulkhead and get those outriggers on and the chassis will then go for a dip in some Zinc. Then life gets interesting.

Why are you making a flywheel? (That sounds like one of my little diversions!)
 
The engine came with an auto box which I didn't want (and wouldn't have mated with the transfer box anyway). Jag flywheels are rarer than very rare things, aftermarket ones priced for 'gentlemen racers', so plan A was to fit a tdi flywheel (so that it was ready for an LR clutch fitting) but the amount of machining to bring it down to a nice 'blippy' thickness was silly. It's not a difficult make because I've taken the ring gear and flex plate from the original setup and will just bolt it onto the new flywheel.

And I haven't thought of plan C yet.

I'm surprised you don't want an automatic - much better stronger solution for potential / probable future tuning hooliganism (!)
