Hello Everyone,

Hoping you could shed some information on my Land Rover.

I have what I believe to be a 1984 Series IIIS, a former military truck from SA, with the straight 6 petrol 2.6L engine (R6).

Any info you have on these trucks would be greatly appreciated. Anyone have any pictures of their military use or info of their history?

Also, I have been unable to find a VIN or Chassis number. There is no identification plate on either side of the bulkhead and no luck around the chassis or spring hanger, any suggestions?

My goal right now is to replace the throw-out bearing and pilot bushing. Just don't want to order the wrong parts.

Any info you can give is GREATLY appreciated,

I might be wrong but that engine just isn't right. It isn't a land rover engine:confused:

I assume the SA in his post means South Africa, and I do know that many Land Rovers were sold there, and, I believe, built there from CKD kits.

But I don't know how many, or if, were sold to the Sout African vehicles, or what engines were fitted to any models sold there.

And my knowledge of military Land Rovers is limited. I have never been in the military, or owned any kind of military vehicle.

That's the thing if its a "kit " built what engine would they use?

Which is the reason he is struggling for a manual for it.

But that isn't a 6cylinder LR engine?

6 cylinder Rover petrol engines were fitted to civilian Series 2a and 3s sold in the UK.

I think they were also fitted in some Forward Control Series, which were military vehicles.

What went on in South Africa, I have little or no idea.

One gentleman suggested that "it's the straight 6 used in the SD1, derived from the Australian p76 engine. The S3S used a Santana gearbox with different 1st, 3rd and reverse ratios. Might help to look for Santana parts."

Does this sound correct or possible to you guys?

I would think a post in the Military Vehicles section on the forum would be a good idea.

And try and include some clear pictures of the vehicle from all angles, and under the bonnet.
 
That's not a UK Landrover sourced engine. The UK 6 cyl had s smooth rocker cover, and the carb on the other side.
Didn't see the pics earlier, not sure if they have been added, or I just missed them among the ads.

You are quite right, that is not a 6 cylinder Rover engine. In the pic, it has the look of an OHC engine, but the pic is too small to be sure.
 
What's the large cylinder on the left side of the pic, air filter? Looks huge! And where does the battery go?
