So replace with a 2nd hand engine - £100 ought to get one - or maybe one will get donated........... I've already offered you one but hopefully someone will come up with one better and closer. I fear you're losing the will................................... stick at it.

Is there anyone nearby who could have a look at it for him?? Just as a second opinion?
And if it is kaput stick another engine in it ..... £100 quid or so as already been said and about 25 for engine hoist hire and add a dry weekend to sort it

waldamar , really appreciate your help and kind offer ,ill give it some consideration , if anyone knows of a garage in Birmingham that would do it id really appreciate a contact no. Im really looking for a drive in , pay and leave job, im also hoping my engine can get repaired.

No problem Neil - my engine is rough and incomplete but it's yours as a last resort - hopefully someone will have one closer/better. Put up a wanted ad on here. Then you need a friendly [cash] mechanic near you. As for repairing yours I don't think we ever really understood what was wrong - very low compression? Seems you would've had some indication before [oil burning, low oil pressure, nasty noises, blowing out of breather] If it is compression it's unlikely to be a cheap repair....................... So we're back to cheap replacement............... as always, good luck

My 2.5 diesel cost £300 for me to rebuild with genuine bearings, rings seals and gaskets. (Obviously not including injection pump).

Petrol should be similar. Even if you swap the engine it'll be worth stripping yours to see what the actual fault was.

How did they get it started in the end anyway?

ring p&s services at broadway mate they are as cheap as chips couple of nice lads and they collected a series 2 from dursley for me so im sure a 3 from brum wouldn't be an issue 077941298897 they might even have an engine

Jockmurray , I've tried number , doesn't connect , do you have an address for them , thanks , looking at it I think there is one too many digits in the number you've forwarded

I'm really sorry to hear about all the hassle you've had lately but if you've waited this long to get the landy I really hope you don't give up on it. I know how frustrating it can get. I intended to buy a decent runner and work on it as I went along. Turns out mine is such a bag of crap i'm having to rebuild it completely. Imagine the satisfaction though when you've got it fixed and you're driving around in it again. I appreciate it's trickier to deal with when it's your daily driver. Good luck though and let us know what happens next.

You can always fix a Landrover. You might not be so lucky on an MPV.
I do hope you get it sorted mate. Get that head off and have a poke about.

Proving more difficult than I thought to get someone to look at this , lots of garages wont take on the work , most garages seem to just deal with servicing and tyres/batteries , I will continue to phone around on Monday ,
one garage wanted £1850 plus £500 fitting!!

get an engine hire an engine crane for the weekend and do it yourself it really is an easy job on a series have you tried p&s if not ring them monday

I did message them , no response yet , ill call them back monday. I havent got off road parking and wouldnt know what I was buying re doing it myself , id end up making a balls of it and buying a piece of crap , some things are worth paying for to avoid further costs.

Neil you do have my sympathy
You've had a lot of mechanics look at your Landy Engine yet
Non of them have been able to come up with a list of what is wrong with it?
Various tests and partial dismantle would reveal all
It does seem odd that so many mechanics could only come up with....
It needs a rebuild?? And not be more specific?
If you only lived nearer me then I would gladly help resolve the problems on what is really a ....
Very basic engine and something that shouldn't be causing so much grief
Regards. Chris

I still think the answer is to chuck another engine in - Neil, post an ad on here................. "WANTED 2.25 ENGINE, NEAR BIRMINGHAM - CHEAP AS POSSIBLE" See what comes up - good luck

Ive got a guy looking at it Wednesday at a garage , he just rebuilds and replaces engines, I work for the police and he does a lot of work for emergency staff and offers a discount so ill let you know. If he gives me a price ill be seeking advice re if its reasonable (for a garage!) I am skint and I know it makes more sense to advertise for one and do it myself but I havent got the space or time to do it , also I dont know what im buying and I might end up putting a piece of crap in!

Good points well made - ask the guy what he'd charge for a straight engine change - then you'll know if you can afford another lump. Not knowing what you're buying is a good point but I'd hope a Landy Zone member wouldn't sell you a bad one.................................................

I agree Chris, surely a reputable garage/mechanic will be able to tell you why it needs to be rebuilt rather than just it needs it?

Neil, am I right in saying you now have a second opinion also saying it needs a rebuild?
