Evening all, does anyone know of an alternative to the standard washer pump on the series 3? My pump works, but doesn't actually pull any water through, are they all as poor as this? Or could it just be that mines past it's best?
I've tried taking mine to bits, and it seems airtight, which I presume is an important factor, and the cogs don't look worn, but I can't deduce how it actually pulls up water, unless the cogs should create a perfect seal between each other...
Just don't want to waste money on another if it's gunna be crap too!
Oh the part number I'm referring to is STC575

Yeah - use the bottle, knock a hole in the top for the tube and bolt an external pump on. Simples.

Halfords pump fitted, lines cleared, all working hunky dory... Turns out the halfords pump was identical to the original BL pump

A pump is a pump as you can screw it down somewhere. Glad its all sorted. I have put "modern" style jets on mine to make things a bit better.

Hi

I've been battling with this problem (ok that's a f*cking lie) I've been trying two or three times to remedy this same issue. As a result I can't get the car MOT'd as it's not reliable enough. Sometimes the water appears on the screen if you hold the button in long enough, other times it doesn't. Which I believe is a fail. I've fitted a new pump and put new tubing on up to the bulkhead when it disappears inside thereafter.

The passegner side has one wee jet which I think is original the driver's side is two jets which I believe is a Defender one.

Any ideas so I can get my car back on the road? I miss spending a fortune at the fuel pumps each weekend after I've been off-roading!

Just a thought, when you press the button are you sure it is running the pump every time? is the switch faulty?

Run a wire from the pos of the battery direct to the correct terminal of the pump, see what it does.

Hi

Good point, and I'm sorry I should have stated that. You can hear the pump quite clearly each time the plunger switch is pressed.

I kow it may sound daft, but the pickup from the bottle is actually below the water line isnt it? Could also be that your piping goes through a tight corner or is crimped somewhere. Work from the pump end and work your way forward...i,e connect pipe near the bottle first. I would replace the jets anyway as they are only a few quid.

Another, 'i know this is daft' one....

But... are you turning the wipers on first? On mine if I didn't do this, the jet hit one wiper arm and didn't go on the screen. I spent a while once sitting in the cab unable to see why one window was dry when pushing the button.
Wipers on first it was fine, so rotated the nozzle a little and it hits the screen but still works best with wipers on then screen wash jets!

The alternative is to fit the washer bars from a Pug 405 to the wiper arms. It works well for me!
