I am about to start my series 3 project. I bought it last August and have been building a garage to work on it. I have only driven it 1 mile since picking it up. Very excited to get going.

I was wondering if you can still get the Dvla history of old vehicles. Previously you could send a cheque for £5 for the history but not sure since GDPR.

It looks really straight and original, paint, parts, interior etc. It is a truck cab in Roan Brown, looking at the series 3 specification book by Taylor James it says this colour was one of 5 colours for county’s only. Would you have been able to select a county colour for a truck cab in April 1984 ‘A’reg?

Wow that looks straight, i would simply run a oily rag over it do the brakes and whatever it needs for MOT then be proud to drive as is.
They're only original once and very rare these days.
Did you pay a good price ?

I agree, do as little as possible to it to keep it original.

I don't think you can get previous owners from the DVLA anymore, but you can always ask.
 
Nope, DVLA have stopped doing the details of previous recorded keepers due to, as you suggest, GDPR. It's a shame because this has been really useful to me in the past. I sucessfully used it to find the military registration of one of my vehicles, and hence its military history.

By the way, nice truck!
 
Gaydon can give you info on the vehicle, not owners but how and when it came out of the factory......it can be hit and miss though and it will cost £50 for the cert. which might not tell you anything you don't already know. I used them to get the build year for my ex mil 109 so I can register it with the DVLA.
 
That's a very very late Series 3, notice the rear lights are top and bottom like a 90/Defender, not together at the top.

I started my 1981 rebuild a few months ago, after it hadn't moved for 10 years and the chassis was rotting away. Now got the new chassis and starting to build it up again.

I'll be watching your progress with interest!

Thank you all for your replies, good advice and reference material.
I plan to keep the paint and life scars on the body as is. I might have the wheels blasted and powder coated in limestone.

The only thing I have done so far is change the engine oil and charged the battery to move it to the garage.
Next
  • I have new glazed and galvanised door tops to paint and fit.
  • gearbox, axle and dif oils to change
  • Middle and rear exhaust to replace
  • Brake inspection and service
  • MOT
I’ll add some pictures as I go.

Hi Steve, just looking through your thread, you have done an amazing job pal. I’ve not finished reading it all yet but I like what I see so far. Really looking forward to having a poke about under mine. Hopefully tomorrow. It looks in good solid shape but I need to get to all the nooks to be sure. Allow plenty of time for the brakes. The take some setting up and its generally best to start with decent cylinders, pipes, flexies drums and shoes. If you find oil in the brakes you need to get to the bottom of where its coming from.

Good advice, the brakes are the no 1 priority. No point having what you think is a good starting vehicle if you put it in a wall on its first outing.

Going for the MOT.

New wiper blades
Middle and rear exhaust with new fitting kit
New battery
New number plates Front & Rear (due to separation and blackening)
Re-condition the original starter motor
Re-tap damaged battery clamp J bolts 1/4 UNF and brass wing nuts
Clean the contacts on the nsf sidelight
Clean the galv from the door top threads 7/16 UNF
Fit the door tops (temporary prior to paint)
Electrics lights, wipers, washer pump etc. tested ok
Run up and down the farm lane to clean and test the brakes
To do..
Handbrake gaiter
Clean some excess grease off around the swivels
Lots more I’d like to do but I’d like a usable “work in progress” vehicle.
 

Can I ask what you've done, here, please?

I need to do something with mine (as a temporary failure if what took my Landy off the road some 10 years ago!). It worked OK before I pulled it apart, but I want to give it a refresh before the engine goes back in again.

Did you do much more than just giving it a clean and changing the brushes (my current minimal plan!)?
