i'm trying to put power steering on my series 3 109. ive been told that the power steering from a disco 1 will fit (with a little modding). i have a power steering box from an early 90, but this doesnt look the part. does anyone know exactly what i need to look for / do to do this? don't mind a little alteration or welding etc. thanks , geoff
1st post by the way. managed to use both hands for most of the typing - much better with engineering!

I looked into power steering, but decided not to bother as it looks like a lot of work, I'll be following your thread though.
Vauxhall corsa's have power steering, its all electric and built into the column, the rack is a standard non power steering rack, I looked into that too, theres a motorsport firm that sells a black box that you connect to the electronic control box in the column to make it work out of the corsa, they are popular on racing cars due to the simplicity and lack of power drain, the only question is whether the unit would withstand the forces required to push a series landys steering.

make sure you get the type C column along with the ECU - the little black box is a couple of quids worth of resistors and a 555 that provides a variable width pulse to the ECU - the pulse width is speed related and affects the amount of assistance provided by the column mounted servo, this is usually fed from a wheel sensor and is replaced with either a dash mounted variable resistor to allow you to manually tweak the assistance for parking/normal driving - or just leave it fixed

the column is more than up to the job, i'd post some pics showing how it's done if i can ever find them

The corsa has an encoder that produces 4 pulses per rev of the diff, assistance is reduced with speed, and there is also a analogue in to measure the battery volts, no assistance when the battery isnt charging.
The speed information as far as I know is via the can bus on the vehicle so a little more complexity is required.
 
Well said hughesy, Is the power steering box from a Disco 1 the same as the ones from the early 90's? i.e. prone to leaking constantly?
 
thanks for the replies chaps, but i wasn't thinking of going down the road of electronics. i dont have any problems generating the hydraulic power, it's the steering box end of things that i'm concerned with. i thought that one of you landygurus may have done this already - we live in hope. as for the man up business, my upper body strength isnt good and i have no toes so owt i can do to make my life a bit easier is ok by me. i'm still working on it! geoff
 
The only reason why I didnt end up with a landy ambulance was because I'm getting old and grey I found the steering hard.
There was a power steering kit around for the job I remember, but like a lot of mod stuff it was £££££££'s.
 
Just sitting here dreaming of power steering, servo assisted brakes, air con, comfy seats.

Is there a kit that you can get for power steering for S2a and S3 ? , would be so bloody nice and save a lot of aching shoulders, I'm getting to look more like charles atlas everyday :D

There was some bloke a while back who posted up his conversion, it was a steering box out of a yank muscle car a chrysler I think, the steering box bolted on the chassis, and the steering linkage was extended to where the landys box would have been.

The td5 deffy has this setup, might work if you didnt mind the box on show.

good news men! apparently a p38 steering box fits without cutting into the front crossmember. havent confirmed this yet but sounds good. i've seen a full article on fitting the disco box, its pretty gory but the bloke made a tidy job all credit due- watch this space, geoff
 
thanks dr pepper, i'd already considered the hydraulic assist, the yanks love them, but i wanted to keep it simple so... i managed to get myself a p38 box today and a defender column and loads of other bits. dont you just love scrapyards... i may make it even stranger by using a vw golf mk4 adjustable column, nice steering wheel,hmm
so basically i think its sorted. when my wife lets me back out to play i'll get it done, might even take some photos geoff
 
befor i went completley soft and rebuilt the series on rangy chassis (makes the convertion quite easy :eek::cool:;)) i used a volvo power steering box with a rangy pump and a resevoir from a _____ :D and a mix match of pipes but if it was any use atall ill put some pics up? oh and welcome to loonyzone :crazy: :welcome2:
 
volvo 165 so realy old. il get some pics tommorrow when i go down the farm, sorry about the delay.
 
aye but it was 20 years ago when it was first fitted on a landy. but i gues there would be other simular boxes
