i'm trying to put power steering on my series 3 109. ive been told that the power steering from a disco 1 will fit (with a little modding). i have a power steering box from an early 90, but this doesnt look the part. does anyone know exactly what i need to look for / do to do this? don't mind a little alteration or welding etc. thanks , geoff
1st post by the way. managed to use both hands for most of the typing - much better with engineering!

Bye Bye Series quirkyness

does anyone have a list of the parts required for this conversion then with the source of the parts i.e which land rover they come off??

I fitted a V8 to my Series III Lightweight which meant bringing the original power steering pump, pipework and reservoir with it. I took the original front crossmember out and replaced it with some heavy wall 50mm box slightly further forward. With tubes welded in to the chassis rail a 4 bolt RR steering box bolts in nicely. A RR and Series III steering link were chopped in half and sleeved together. A RR steering column bolts to the original mount and an additional mount needs fabricating to stop the bottom flapping in the wind. A RR steering shaft needs chopping and sleeving to lengthen it and it all connects up. A couple of weekend's work once you've got all the bits together.

nice one im enquiring for my father in law as he still does some green laning and pay and play in his s11a you say you used a v8 and took the steering over but i think hes running a 3.0 n/a isuzu or nissan engine would this make a difference is there a website or another forum with a full walk through for this any metal fabrication is not a problem cheers

hi
a chap advertising on ebay will convert your vehicle for £1000, with a jap box fitted. have a look. i think he lives in lincoln.

yeh hes based in newark he did give him a call and i think he quoted him £1200 but he doesnt really have that to spend it sounds alot cheaper using all land rover parts and doing it yourself plus we enjoy a challenge :)

Looks like you have a choice, pay the dough, or faff about working it out for yourself.
There is a range rover steering box that fits over the axle, but they are getting hard to get now, the other way is to fit the disco/deffy steering but that means cutting and moveing the front crossmember, not a sunday morning job.
And dont forget modding the steering and chassis is a dvla registration issue, the steering isnt so bad, but as soon as you take a grinder to the chassis you'll get a q plate to keep it legal.

on the forums a few people opt for moving the crossmember forward but none of tehm speak of taking it for a check with the dvla im guessing they do it on the sly?

:):)Hi geodunn
Did you get your power steering done in the end if so any pics available / run-through of how you did it.

Cheers Les

Moving the chassis rail is most deffo a chassis mod, and you'd end up with a q plate to keep it legal.
The RR scout box on the other hand doesnt need major chassis mods, there will probably be other ways you can do it without major bashing.
I'm still wondering whether you could stuff a vauxhall corsa column on, it has power steering within the column, race cars use them a lot, you can even buy a black box gizmo to make them work.

yeah ive also heard of this dr pepper alot of people opt for the corsa column as you dont need to take alot off to change much over and you just need to wire the little black box on the column in but im not saying that that moving the front crossmember isnt a dvla issue im just saying i know people that have done it but it isnt q plated

HI I WAS WONDERING IF YOU HAD ANY MORE PICS OF THE PUMP OR ANY SIZES OR DIMENSIONS OF HOW YOU SET IT UP CHEERS.

Never felt the need to power assist any of the series I have run. I have seen Rangey P38 box used with a 300tdi conversion, a neat job but took a fair bit of time to think what was needed.
A well set up standard system is not over heavy, most heavy steering problems are down to lack of oil in the relay and general poor set up of swivels/tracking etc. Tonka toy tyres don't help....

as this thread is about 4 years old and the chap whose post you quoted only ever made 3 posts, the request for more pix may be moot :D

thanks for the info guys i will manageo_O thought someone might of had some info on it just with it being a landrover forum.

cheers
